Chapter 7: The Badge of Betrayal

Emily slowly raised her hands.

Every rifle in the room was aimed at her chest.

The police captain stepped forward with an expression so calm it was almost comforting.

"My name is Captain Daniel Reeves."

He smiled.

"You've been making this investigation much easier than we expected."

Mr. Harrison shouted, "Emily, don't trust him!"

The captain barely glanced at the old man.

"Cuff him."

Two officers immediately slammed Mr. Harrison against the wall.

Emily's voice trembled.

"You're supposed to arrest Victor!"

Victor Ashford laughed.

"Arrest me?"

He casually walked toward the captain.

To Emily's horror...

The two men shook hands.

The room fell silent.

"No..." Emily whispered.

Captain Reeves adjusted his badge.

"You finally understand."

"For seventeen years, we've been partners."

Victor smiled.

"I handle the money."

"The captain handles the law."

Every murder...

Every missing witness...

Every piece of evidence that had disappeared...

Had been erased by the very people sworn to protect the innocent.

Emily felt sick.

"So my parents never had a chance..."

Reeves answered coldly,

"They trusted the police."

"That was their biggest mistake."

One officer grabbed the encrypted drive from Emily's hands.

Victor sighed with relief.

"At last."

He connected it to a laptop sitting on the grand piano.

A password screen appeared.

Everyone looked at Emily.

Victor smiled.

"Tell us the password."

Emily slowly shook her head.

"I don't know it."

Victor nodded.

"I believe you."

Then he turned toward Mr. Harrison.

"But I know someone who does."

Without hesitation, Reeves drew his pistol and pointed it directly at Harrison's head.

Emily screamed.

"Stop!"

Victor calmly counted.

"Three..."

Mr. Harrison remained silent.

"Two..."

Tears streamed down Emily's face.

"Please..."

"One."

The gun fired.

Bang!

Mr. Harrison collapsed to the floor.

Emily fell beside him, pressing her trembling hands against the blood spreading across his shirt.

"No! Stay with me!"

Harrison struggled to breathe.

He smiled weakly.

"They... missed..."

Emily froze.

The bulletproof vest beneath his torn shirt had stopped the fatal shot.

With the last of his strength, he slipped a tiny folded piece of paper into her palm.

"Your mother's favorite song..."

"That's the password."

Before Emily could unfold the paper, every light in the mansion suddenly went out.

The emergency generators failed.

Darkness swallowed the entire house.

Then a loud explosion echoed from the basement.

The floor shook violently.

Victor shouted,

"Someone's inside the vault!"

Seconds later, every security monitor flickered back to life.

A hooded figure appeared on every screen.

Their face was hidden.

Their voice was distorted.

But their words froze everyone in place.

"You've all been chasing the wrong inheritance."

"The money is worthless."

"What your parents protected..."

"...was never a fortune."

"It was a list."

"A list containing the names of every politician, judge, billionaire... and police officer who helped build the deadliest criminal empire in America."

The hooded figure looked directly into the camera.

"And in sixty seconds..."

"I'm releasing every name to the world."

Victor Ashford's smile disappeared for the first time in seventeen years.

Captain Reeves turned pale.

Because they both knew one thing.

May you like

If that list went public...

Their empire would fall overnight.
