CHAPTER 4 â âThe Woman in Rags Opened the Locked Roomâ

The next morning, Eleanor returned to the building.
But this time, no one laughed.
Employees stood frozen as she walked through the lobby in the same torn coat, carrying the same dusty backpack.
The marble floor that once echoed with insults now echoed with fear.
Derek was gone.
Victor Hale was in federal custody.
But Eleanor knew the betrayal had not ended with him.
Someone else had helped him.
Someone still inside the building.
She stopped in front of a private elevator that only board members could access.
Richard Lawson stepped forward nervously.
âMrs. Ashford⊠that elevator hasnât worked in years.â
Eleanor slowly lifted the silver key.
âIt works for me.â
The key slid into a hidden panel beside the elevator.
A soft click sounded.
Everyone gasped as the doors opened.
Inside was no ordinary elevator.
It descended beneath the building.
Far below the lobby.
Far below the parking garage.
When the doors opened again, the executives saw something none of them knew existed.
A sealed archive room.
Old contracts.
Original ownership papers.
Security recordings.
Handwritten letters from Eleanorâs late husband.
Eleanor walked to the center of the room and placed her hand on a metal cabinet.
âMy husband built this room because he never trusted greedy men in expensive suits.â
Then she opened the cabinet.
Inside was a red folder labeled:
ASHFORD FINAL PROTOCOL
Richardâs face turned pale.
He whispered,
âNo one was supposed to know about that.â
Eleanor turned slowly.
âBut you did.â
The room went dead silent.
Richard stepped backward.
For years, he had pretended to be loyal.
For years, he had called Eleanor a friend.
But now his shaking hands revealed the truth.
Eleanor opened the red folder.
Inside was a signed document proving Richard had secretly approved Victorâs illegal transfers.
Victor had stolen the money.
But Richard had opened the door.
Eleanor looked at him with cold eyes.
May you like
âYou didnât betray the company, Richard.â
âYou betrayed my husbandâs grave.â
