CHAPTER 8 — “The Funeral That Was Never Real”

That night, Eleanor and Lily reopened every document connected to Thomas's death.
One detail suddenly stood out.
Thomas's coffin had been sealed.
No family member had been allowed to open it.
The official explanation had always been simple:
"The injuries were too severe."
Eleanor's hands began shaking.
She looked at Richard's old confession again.
Then at the death certificate.
Then at the burial records.
None of the signatures matched.
Someone had forged them.
Before sunrise, Eleanor obtained a court order.
The cemetery was surrounded by police officers.
Federal investigators.
Forensic experts.
News helicopters circled overhead.
As workers slowly lifted Thomas Ashford's coffin from the ground...
Thousands watched live online.
The lid was carefully opened.
Silence.
Then someone screamed.
The coffin...
Was empty.
No body.
Only a neatly folded gray business suit.
A silver wedding ring.
And a cassette tape labeled in Thomas's handwriting.
"Play only if the coffin is empty."
Every officer stared in disbelief.
Eleanor pressed Play.
Thomas's familiar voice echoed across the cemetery.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...then they never buried me."
"I escaped because they tried to kill me."
"But I couldn't come home."
"They would have killed Eleanor too."
"I've been hiding for one reason."
"To expose the people above Richard Lawson."
The tape ended with one shocking sentence.
"I'll return when it's finally safe."
The entire nation exploded.
Television networks interrupted their programming.
