CHAPTER 5 â âThe Chairman Fell to His Kneesâ

Richard Lawson collapsed into a chair.
His face looked older in seconds.
âEleanor, pleaseâŠâ
âI protected this company for thirty years.â
Eleanorâs voice stayed calm.
âNo.â
âYou protected yourself.â
Richard began crying.
He said Victor had threatened him.
He said he was scared.
He said he only signed the papers because he thought Eleanor was too old to understand.
That sentence changed the room.
Eleanor smiled sadly.
âToo old?â
She placed another file on the table.
Inside were photographs.
Richard meeting Victor at private restaurants.
Richard transferring money to his daughterâs luxury foundation.
Richard buying three homes under fake company names.
The board members stared in horror.
Richard had not been threatened.
He had been paid.
Then Eleanor revealed the cruelest truth.
Her husband had once saved Richard from bankruptcy.
Gave him a job.
Trusted him like a brother.
And Richard repaid that kindness by stealing from his widow.
Federal agents entered again.
Richard stood up, trembling.
âYou canât do this to me.â
Eleanor walked closer.
âI already did.â
The agents placed him in handcuffs.
But before they took him away, Richard turned and shouted,
âYou think you won?â
âYou donât even know the worst secret in this building!â
Eleanor froze.
The agents stopped.
Richard laughed bitterly.
âAsk your husbandâs lawyer what really happened the night he died.â
The room went silent.
Eleanorâs face changed for the first time.
Because her husbandâs death had always been called an accident.
A fall.
A tragedy.
But nowâŠ
The woman everyone thought was homeless realized something terrifying.

Her disguise had uncovered financial crimes.
But it had also opened the door to a murder.
