Chapter 7 - THE FINAL SIEGE"Mabel! Answer me!" Spencer yelled into his phone as he sped back toward Pinecrest Heights, his guards following in two backup vehicles.

Static buzzed over the speaker, followed by a harsh, raspy voice that made Spencer’s skin crawl.

"Hello, Spencer."

It wasn't Marcus. It was a voice Spencer recognized from his past—a voice he hadn't heard in fifteen years.

"Evelyn..." Spencer breathed, his jaw tightening.

Evelyn Warren—his stepmother, the woman who had married his father for money and disappeared abroad shortly after his death.

"Did you really think that fool Marcus was running the show?" Evelyn cackled through the speaker, her voice dripping with malice. "Marcus was just my errand boy. I spent thirty years waiting for your father’s fortune, only to be left with a fraction while it was locked in a trust for 'future heirs.' When I found out Pamela had your frozen genetic material, I realized I could create the ultimate heir—and control the entire fortune through a proxy!"

"You put a newborn child outside in the freezing rain!" Spencer snarled, pushing the accelerator to the floor.

"Marcus panicked when the child welfare authorities got involved! He tried to discard the evidence," Evelyn sneered. "But now I’m here to clean up his mess personally. I have the baby, Spencer. And your loyal little housekeeper is tied up in the study. If you want your precious son back, come inside alone. No police, no security. Or I burn this mansion to the ground with everyone inside it."

The line went dead.

Spencer looked back at Nora and Charlee, who were sitting in the rear seats under the protection of his head guard.

"Stay here with the guards," Spencer commanded. "If I'm not out in ten minutes, call the federal marshals."

"Uncle Spencer, wait!" Charlee called out, reaching into her pocket and handing him a small, silver key. "Grandma gave me this. She said it opens the secret passage behind the library fireplace. The bad people don't know about it."

Spencer took the key, looking at his brave little niece with profound gratitude. "Thank you, Charlee. I'll bring Dexter home."
