Chapter 8 - THE TRUE INHERITANCESpencer slipped through the rain-soaked gardens, bypassing the main drive, and unlocked the hidden iron grate at the base of the mansion's foundation. Slipping through the dark, narrow stone tunnel built by his grandfather decades ago, he emerged silently inside the hidden alcove behind the library fireplace.

Peering through the wooden slats, he saw Evelyn standing in the center of the grand study. She was holding a kerosene lantern in one hand and a container of gasoline in the other. On the desk nearby lay baby Dexter, crying softly in his blue blanket. Mrs. Mabel was bound to a chair in the corner, gagged but conscious.
"Come out, Spencer!" Evelyn shouted, her voice echoing in the cavernous room. "I know you're nearby! Sign the estate release papers on the table, or I drop this lantern and turn this whole cursed family history into ash!"
Spencer didn't hesitate. He stepped out from the hidden wall, holding his hands up calmly.
"Put the lantern down, Evelyn," Spencer said softly. "You've already lost. Marcus has confessed to everything. The police know about Jocelyn Cooper, they know about Nora, and they know about you."
"I don't care about the police!" Evelyn screamed, her eyes wild with insanity. "This money was supposed to be mine! I gave thirty years of my life to your insufferable father!"
"You didn't care about my father, and you don't care about this baby," Spencer said, taking a slow, calculated step forward. "You only care about power. But power built on blood and lies always crumbles."
Evelyn raised the lantern high, preparing to shatter it against the gasoline-soaked floorboards. "Then we all burn together!"
BANG!
A sharp gunshot echoed through the room. Evelyn gasped, dropping the lantern.
Spencer lunged forward, catching the lit lantern mid-air before the flame could touch the gas-soaked carpet. He smothered the burning wick with his heavy coat.
Evelyn collapsed to the floor, holding her wounded shoulder. Standing in the doorway of the study was Officer Casey from Child Protective Services—accompanied by a squad of state troopers who had surrounded the property via the rear forest trail.
"Drop your weapons! Hands behind your head!" the troopers shouted, swarming the room and apprehending Evelyn.
Spencer ignored the chaos around him. He ran to the desk and picked up baby Dexter, holding the child tightly against his chest. The infant immediately stopped crying, opening his striking grayish-blue eyes and staring up at his father.
THREE MONTHS LATER...The sun shone brightly over the lush, green grounds of the renovated Warren Estate. The iron gates that had once served as a prison of isolation were now thrown wide open.
In the courtyard, seven-year-old Charlee was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the lawn, her laughter echoing through the air. Nearby, Nora sat on a sunlit bench, laughing as she chatted with Florence, who had fully recovered from her hospital stay and was now comfortably retired on the estate.
Spencer stood on the terrace, cradling three-month-old Dexter in his arms. Mrs. Mabel stepped out onto the porch, carrying a tray of iced tea.
"You look peaceful, Mr. Warren," Mrs. Mabel smiled. "It suits you."
"For twelve years, I thought this house was a tomb, Mabel," Spencer said, watching his sister and niece play in the yard. "I thought my lineage ended with my medical prognosis and my father's bitter legacy. But Dexter didn't just survive that rainstorm... he brought my real family back to me."
Casey walked up the terrace steps, carrying a thick folder of official documents.
"Well, Mr. Warren," Casey said with a warm smile. "The DNA tests are finalized, the court proceedings are concluded, and Evelyn and Marcus have both been sentenced to life without parole. The legal adoption and guardianship paperwork is officially complete."
She handed him the gold-embossed document.
Spencer looked down at his baby boy, who cooed softly and reached out a tiny hand, grasping Spencer's finger tightly.
