Chapter 12 - A Reckoning at the Corner TableKyle froze. The bravado he had once carried like cheap armor was entirely gone, replaced by a twitchy, manic desperation.

He took two unsteady steps forward before Matteo’s two bodyguards—disguised in casual civilian clothes—stepped smoothly into his path, blocking his advance without a single word.
"Sophie," Kyle rasped, his voice cracking horribly as he pointed a shaking finger toward her. "You... you ruined me. Your little monster took everything!"
The cafe went dead silent. The barista stopped steaming milk; the soft chatter evaporated into thin air. Customers turned in their seats, whispering as recognition slowly dawned on the older patrons who remembered the viral video from five years ago.
Sophie didn't cower. She didn't shrink back against the brick wall.
With slow, deliberate grace, she stood up from the booth. Five years of standing beside the most powerful man in Boston, five years of loving a man who treated her like sacred ground, had burned away every last shred of fear she had ever carried.
She walked out from the table, stopping just a few feet away from Kyle.
The contrast was staggering. Kyle looked like a man buried alive; Sophie looked like royalty stepping through her own garden.
"You ruined yourself, Kyle," Sophie said, her voice entirely calm, steady, and completely devoid of hatred. "You built your entire life on cruelty and intimidation. When the foundation cracked, there was nothing left."
Kyle’s face twisted in a pathetic, snarling rage. He lunged forward, trying to push past the bodyguard, screaming, "You think you're safe with him? He’s a killer! He’s—"
He didn't get to finish the sentence.
Matteo didn't rush. He stood up slowly from the booth, his towering frame casting a dark, chilling shadow across the floor. He closed the distance between them in three long strides, standing directly beside Sophie.

Matteo didn't even look at Kyle’s face. He looked down at Kyle’s right hand—the hand that, five years ago, had dared to wrap around Sophie’s wrist and leave a bruise.
Kyle’s knees began to tremble. The color drained entirely from his skin.
