Chapter 13 - The Final Word"You spoke her name," Matteo said. His voice was not a shout. It was a low, velvet whisper that carried the terrifying weight of a loaded gun in a closed room. "You raised your voice in her presence."

"I—I was just..." Kyle stammered, backing up until his spine slammed hard against the glass front window, rattling the display pastry cases.
"Look at her," Matteo commanded, his dark eyes flashing with lethal ice.
Kyle swallowed hard, darting a terrified glance toward Sophie.
"Look at what you tried to break," Matteo continued, stepping closer until he was towering over the ruined man. "And look at who she became. You are a ghost, Kyle. A pathetic, forgotten footnote in a city that has already erased you."
Matteo raised a single hand. The cafe door swung open instantly, and two local police officers—men who owed their positions to the legal, legitimate restructuring of Boston’s civic infrastructure led by the Duca Foundation—walked inside.
They didn't look at Matteo with fear; they looked with professional obedience.
"Kyle Mercer," the lead officer said, pulling out a pair of silver handcuffs. "You have an outstanding warrant for securities fraud, extortion, and violation of federal restraining orders."
Kyle didn't fight back. He slumped against the glass, defeated, broken, and utterly weightless as the cuffs clicked shut around his wrists.
As the officers dragged him out into the bright morning sunlight, Kyle cast one last, lingering look back at Sophie.
She didn't gloat. She didn't smile in triumph. She simply turned away, walking back to her seat as if nothing had ever happened.
Matteo pulled out her chair, waiting until she was seated before taking his own place across from her.

"Are you alright?" Matteo asked, his fierce expression melting instantly into deep, protective tenderness.
Sophie reached across the table, lacing her fingers through his. "I haven't felt this light in five years, Matteo."
