A tall, silver-haired man with an unyielding posture and eyes of absolute authority would step out first, walking around to open the door for a stunning, elegant woman with a radiant smile and a diamond-and-black-pearl ring that caught the morning light.

They would sit at that exact table, order two black coffees, and talk quietly, completely lost in each other’s eyes, as if the rest of the world simply did not exist.

They weren't hiding anymore. They weren't running.

Matteo reached across the table, taking Sophie’s hand in his, just as he had done a decade ago.

"Penny for your thoughts, my queen?" Matteo asked softly, a warm, affectionate smile touching his lips.
