Chapter 14 - Shadows of the Past Buried ForeverThe arrest of Kyle Mercer barely made the local news cycle. It was a quiet, legal footnote—the exact opposite of the chaotic, viral explosion that had first thrust Sophie and Matteo into the public eye half a decade ago.

By evening, the city of Boston hummed with its usual rhythm, indifferent to the small tragedies of men who refused to evolve.

At the sprawling Duca estate, the moonlight poured through the tall glass doors of the master study. Piles of architectural blueprints and international shipping ledgers lay scattered across the massive mahogany desk, but Matteo wasn't looking at business.

He stood by the window, swirling a glass of dark amber whiskey, watching the distant lights of the harbor shimmer against the dark water.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and barefoot footsteps padded across the Persian rug.

Sophie slid her arms around his waist from behind, pressing her cheek gently against his back. She felt the steady, powerful thrum of his heartbeat—the rhythm that had anchored her through every storm of her life.

"He's asleep," Sophie whispered, referring to Leo, who had finally worn himself out after a long day of school and playground adventures.

Matteo turned within her embrace, setting the glass down on a nearby side table. He wrapped his strong arms securely around her, pulling her flush against his chest, burying his face in her soft, vanilla-scented hair.

"It’s finally over, isn't it?" Sophie murmured, closing her eyes. "Every ghost... every shadow. They're all gone."

"They were gone the day I put that ring on your finger," Matteo corrected softly, pulling back just enough to look deeply into her eyes. "Everything else was just time catching up to the truth."

Sophie smiled, her hands resting on his chest, feeling the solid warmth of the man who had burned down a corrupt world just to build a sanctuary for her.

"Do you remember what you told me at the Orpheum Theater?" she asked playfully. "When Arthur Vance said sentimentality was a fatal flaw?"

Matteo’s lips curved into a rare, devastatingly handsome smile. "I told him he didn't understand the difference between weakness and devotion."

"You were right," Sophie whispered, pulling him down into a slow, breathless kiss that tasted like forever.
