Chapter 10 - Checkmate

Forty-eight hours later, our private intelligence network cracked the Zurich proxy.

The mastermind behind the entire plot wasn't a rival tech CEO or a foreign competitor. It was Julian Vance—no relation to my corporate lawyer—a ruthless international hedge-fund manager and my father’s former business partner who had been legally forced out of Hayes Global a decade ago for systematic embezzlement.

Richard had been his inside man, groomed and planted to infiltrate my life, marry me, and systematically dismantle the empire from within. When Richard panicked and tried to kill me prematurely, the shadow syndicate simply adjusted their timeline.

Except they didn't know who they were dealing with.

Inside the subterranean control bunker beneath the Big Sur estate, I sat before a wall of glowing monitors displaying the live financial tracking of Julian Vance’s global portfolio.

"Target’s primary holding company is currently executing a hostile liquidity transfer," Marcus reported, typing furiously on his console. "If we execute the counter-protocol now, we drain every single cent of their operational capital into our secure vault."

I rested my hand on the central console, looking at the blinking digital interface.

"Do it," I commanded softly.

A cascading series of algorithms—written by my father and perfected by me—swept through international banking nodes in Zurich, London, and the Cayman Islands like a digital tsunami. Within ninety seconds, Julian Vance’s entire multibillion-dollar hedge fund was legally, irreversibly seized under federal anti-racketeering statutes triggered by our automated corporate defense framework.

My phone buzzed instantly. An unknown international number flashing on the screen.

I swiped and pressed it to my ear.

"You're a very difficult woman to kill, Amelia," a cold, cultured voice hissed through the speaker from half a world away.

I smiled, leaning back in my leather chair as the monitors flashed OPERATION COMPLETE: ASSETS SECURED.

"You should have checked my father's corporate bylaws before you tried to play God," I replied smoothly. "Your accounts are frozen, your operatives are being rounded up by Interpol, and your entire syndicate is finished."

A heavy, furious silence hung on the line.

"This isn't over," the voice snarled.

May you like

"No," I whispered, my voice cutting through the receiver like jagged glass. "It's not. Because I'm coming for the rest of you."

I hung up the phone, turning off the terminal as the monitors dimmed to a steady, peaceful hum. Upstairs, my son was sleeping soundly, completely safe.
