Chapter 12 - Nightfall in the Alps

The Alpine wind howled at 8,000 feet, driving sheets of freezing sleet against the rugged rock face of the Swiss mountains. Our tactical transport helicopter hovered in total darkness, its lights completely killed as we fast-roped down onto the heavily fortified concrete roof of Vance’s bunker.

The descent was brutal, the freezing air burning my lungs, but my grip on my carbine was steady.

"Perimeter breach in three, two, one..." Marcus whispered through the encrypted comms channel.

Bang.

The heavy steel maintenance hatch blew inward with a controlled flash of C4. Before the smoke could even clear, my team descended into the compound like ghosts. Alarms wailed instantly, flashing harsh red emergency lights across the sterile, steel-lined corridors of the underground stronghold.

"Move! Clear left!" Marcus shouted, his weapon leading the way as we swept down the central hallway toward Vance’s command center.

Guards rushed out from the barracks, but they were entirely unprepared for a professional, highly coordinated military strike led by a woman they thought they had safely outmaneuvered from across an ocean. Flashbangs detonated with deafening cracks, blinding the sentries before they could even lift their weapons.

I stepped over a dazed mercenary, my boots clicking rhythmically against the metal grating as I walked straight toward the heavy titanium doors of the master control room.

The game of shadows was over. It was time to look the monster in the eye.
