Chapter 15 - Homecoming

Back in California, the spring sun was beginning to warm the Pacific coast, turning the ocean into a sheet of shimmering blue glass.
I stood on the private terrace of my Big Sur estate, holding little Julian in my arms as the morning breeze ruffled his soft dark hair. The nightmare was officially over. Federal prosecutors had formally closed the investigation into the Hayes Global conspiracy, and both Richard and Julian Vance were locked away in separate maximum-security facilities, facing consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Hayes Global stock had hit an all-time high, driven by the rollout of our revolutionary bio-tech security protocols and the public resilience of its female CEO.
Marcus walked onto the terrace, holding a silver tray with a fresh cup of coffee.
"Morning, boss. The federal magistrate just finalized the asset liquidation distribution. Every single penny recovered from Vance’s syndicate has been reallocated into the Hayes Foundation for Maternal Health and Child Safety."
I took the coffee cup, smiling faintly. "Good. Let some good come out of their greed."
"Are you taking any time off?" Marcus asked, leaning against the stone railing. "The board is practically begging you to take a two-week Caribbean vacation."
May you like
"No vacations, Marcus," I replied, looking down at my son's bright, curious eyes. "An empire doesn't run itself. And besides... I like the view from here."
The ocean below crashed rhythmically against the rocks—the exact same spot where I had plummeted toward what my husband thought was certain death. Every wave was a reminder that I hadn't just survived; I had evolved.
