Chapter 2 - The Widower’s Performance

The emergency call to the Coast Guard came in precisely fourteen minutes after the push.

Back on land, Richard Hayes was already weeping into a handkerchief inside the sleek leather interior of his chauffeured Mercedes, parked dramatically at the Monterey Bay overlook. He had landed the chopper at a private airfield twenty miles away, playing the frantic, shattered husband with an Academy Award-winning precision.

"She wanted to lean out to take a photograph of the whale migration," Richard choked out to the responding sheriff’s deputies, his shoulders shaking with carefully measured grief. "The wind... it caught the door frame. I grabbed her, I swear to God I grabbed her, but she slipped right through my fingers. My wife... my unborn child..."

Deputy Chief Miller, a weary veteran of coastal jurisdiction, eyed the billionaire with professional skepticism masked by polite sympathy. "Mr. Hayes, witnesses at the airfield noted your flight path deviated significantly from the standard coastal tour. Furthermore, flight logs show the cabin door warning light was manually overridden from the pilot's console."

Richard’s tears dried up instantly, though his face maintained its mask of devastation. He dabbed at his dry eyes, smoothly pivoting. "An override? That’s impossible. The aircraft maintenance is handled by Hayes Global contractors. Look, Chief Miller, I understand you have a protocol to follow, but my wife owned eighty-two percent of the controlling voting shares in the largest tech conglomerate on the West Coast. Every hour the Coast Guard spends questioning a grieving widower is an hour the global markets drop billions due to instability. I suggest you focus your efforts on the water."

It was a masterclass in psychological warfare and subtle economic intimidation. Richard wasn't just mourning; he was establishing his dominance, reminding local law enforcement of the immense power he was about to legally inherit.

What Richard didn't know was that his phone—a custom encrypted titanium device I had gifted him on our anniversary—was currently routing every text, call, and keystroke directly to a mirrored server sitting in my private security bunker.

As Richard stepped back into his car, wiping the last fake tear from his cheek, he dialed his lawyer, Victor Sterling.

"It's done, Victor," Richard whispered, a dark, victorious chuckle escaping his lips. "File the preliminary probate motion for emergency temporary administration of the Hayes estate. The coast is completely clear."
