Chapter 20 - Queen of the Sky

Richard’s face was bruised, his eyes wide with a mixture of impotent rage and crawling, paralyzing terror as he stared down at me.

"You're a monster, Amelia," he spat, blood trickling from the corner of his lip. "A cold, calculating monster."

I reached out, gently straightening the collar of his tattered prison jumpsuit with the exact same slow, deliberate grace he had once used to kiss my forehead before pushing me out of a helicopter.

"No, Richard," I whispered, my voice cold, lethal, and absolute. "I was just a woman who refused to let you play God. And now, you're going back to your cage."

I stepped back, giving a single nod to Marcus. "Take him away. Send him to the supermax facility in Florence, Colorado. Make sure he never sees the sun again."

"With pleasure, boss," Marcus muttered, dragging a screaming, thrashing Richard out of the study and down the grand staircase into the night.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off the noise and restoring absolute, profound silence to the room.

I walked slowly over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out past the terrace toward the vast, endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The storm clouds were parting, and a brilliant, golden sunrise was beginning to break along the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant shades of amber and violet.

Upstairs, I could hear the faint, happy sound of little Julian waking up and calling out for his mother.

I smiled, resting one hand against the cool glass of the window, completely at peace. The fall had tried to break me, but it had only taught me how to fly.
