Chapter 1 - The Midnight Epiphany

The apartment was entirely silent save for the muffled rhythm of the snow hitting the glass and the soft, steady breathing of the little girl asleep on the sofa. Victor Caldwell remained standing in the dim hallway, staring into the living room. His chest ached with a strange, fierce ache that felt entirely disproportionate to the hours he had spent with Sophie. She had appeared out of nowhere like a phantom forged from winter frost and loneliness, yet looking at her clutching that worn rag doll, he realized the emptiness he had felt when walking through the door hours earlier had vanished completely.

He walked quietly back to the kitchen, poured himself a finger of scotch, and pulled out his phone. The screen cast a harsh blue light over his tired face. He opened his contacts, scrolling past the corporate executives, board members, and superficial acquaintances until he found the number he hadn't dialed in over a year.

Marcus Vance. The senior partner at Vance, Sterling & Cole—the most feared family law firm in the state.

Marcus answered on the second ring, his voice gruff with sleep. "Victor? It's three in the morning on Christmas Day. This better be a corporate merger in freefall."

"I need your help, Marcus," Victor said, his voice level and absolute. "Not corporate. Personal."

"Try me."

"I need to initiate an emergency custody and adoption filing before the courts open on December twenty-sixth. I need a background check run on a child abandoned tonight, and I need a watertight temporary guardianship order drafted by sunrise."

There was a heavy pause on the other end of the line. Marcus cleared his throat, the sleep evaporating from his voice. "Victor, you're knee-deep in a messy custody battle with Amanda over Clare. Adding an unknown child to your household right now is legal suicide. Amanda's lawyers will tear you apart."

"I don't care about Amanda's lawyers," Victor replied, his eyes fixed on the small figure under the blanket in the next room. "I found a little girl freezing at a bus stop tonight. Her name is Sophie. She has no one. And by the time the sun comes up, she's going to be mine."
