Chapter 10 - The Amber Legacy

The kitchen seemed to close in around Victor. The words on the page echoed in his mind with terrifying clarity. The people she belongs to are coming to collect.
Before he could process the threat, the front door rattled violently. Not a knock—someone was trying to force the mechanical lock.
"Sophie," Victor called out, his voice sharp with sudden panic. "Get into the panic room behind the bookcase in my office right now!"
"Victor? What's happening?" Sophie asked, her eyes wide with fear as she dropped her building blocks.
"Go! Now!"
As Sophie scrambled toward the office, the heavy oak front door splintered inward with a deafening crash. Two men in dark tactical gear, faces concealed by ski masks, burst into the foyer.
Victor didn't hesitate. He lunged across the kitchen island, pulling a heavy-duty tactical flashlight from the utility drawer and hurling it directly at the lead intruder's face, buying himself two crucial seconds to draw the legally registered firearm from his safe.
