Chapter 5 - The Shelter of Vows

The heavy oak door clicked shut, leaving a profound, aching silence in the kitchen.

Victor exhaled slowly, letting the adrenaline drain from his veins. He turned around and walked back to the table. Sophie was shaking, her small shoulders heaving with silent, terrified tears.

He knelt down beside her chair, gently pulling her small hands away from her face.

"Sophie," he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "Look at me."

She raised her head, her blue eyes swimming with tears. "Is she going to take me away?"

"No one is taking you away," Victor vowed, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Not Amanda. Not anyone. You are safe here with me. Do you understand?"

Sophie sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve, and nodded slowly. "You yelled at her."

"I did," Victor admitted, offering a faint, reassuring smile. "Because nobody gets to walk into my home and make you feel afraid. Not on Christmas, not ever."

He reached out and wiped a stray tear from her cheek. The fragile trust that had begun to form the night before deepened into something unbreakable.

Just then, Victor’s phone buzzed on the counter. He pulled it out of his pocket. It was a text message from Marcus Vance:

Emergency guardianship petition filed with Judge Harrison an hour ago. Hearing is set for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Be there.

Victor looked down at Sophie, who was now cautiously picking up her fork again, comforted by his presence.

"Sophie," Victor said gently. "How would you like to go shopping today? We need to get you some clothes that actually fit. And maybe... maybe we can pick out a real Christmas tree for your room."

May you like

Her eyes lit up, the shadows of the morning momentarily vanishing behind a spark of pure childish joy. "A tree? For my room?"

"The biggest one we can find," Victor promised.
