Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Shadows

The barrel of Victor's pistol remained locked on the intruder's chest, his finger resting lightly against the trigger. The apartment was dead silent except for the frantic hum of the refrigerator and Sophie's muffled, terrified breathing coming from the security room down the hall.

"Who sent you?" Victor demanded, his voice a low, lethal growl that had earned him billions in the corporate arena and ironclad control over his empire. "Name your employer, or you won't walk out of this hallway."

The intruder—a lean, scarred man with cold grey eyes—smirked without humor. He didn't raise his hands. "My employer doesn't need to be named, Mr. Caldwell. But I'll give you a hint: Sophie isn't an orphan because she fell through the cracks. She's an orphan because her family holds a fifty-one percent controlling interest in an international logistics trust that your legal system thinks was dissolved a decade ago."

Victor’s mind raced. Logistics. Trust. The words triggered an immediate, chilling association with the dark networks Julian Moretti and Alexander Sterling had spent years dismantling.

"You're talking about the Syndicate," Victor said, his eyes narrowing.

"We're talking about legacy," the operative replied sharply. "And the grandfather who wants his bloodline back. You think a thirty-day emergency guardianship signed by a municipal judge protects you from men who rewrite governments? Hand the girl over quietly, Caldwell. Save yourself a very messy funeral."

Before the man could finish his sentence, a heavy shadow detached itself from the hallway corner. Parker—whom Victor had hired as a private security detail weeks prior—stepped out silently, bringing the butt of a heavy tactical shotgun down squarely across the intruder's shoulder blade. The man collapsed instantly, unconscious against the shattered wood of the front door.

The second operative raised his rifle, but Parker pivoted with practiced, military precision, firing a non-lethal slug that struck the second man in the chest, sending him crashing backward into the elevator alcove.

Victor lowered his weapon, his chest heaving with adrenaline. He looked at Parker, whose face was grim.

"They tracked the secure IP ping from Marcus Vance's office," Parker said, checking the hallway outside. "The legal filing compromised our digital footprint. We have twenty minutes before their extraction team realizes these two missed their check-in."
