Chapter 20 - The Warmth of Winter

December 24th arrived with a familiar, gentle fall of snow that blanketed Seattle in a pristine coat of white.
The apartment was warm, smelling of cinnamon, roasted chestnuts, and pine needles from a magnificent Christmas tree that reached all the way to the living room ceiling, covered in colorful lights and handmade ornaments.
Victor sat on the living room rug, wrapped in a comfortable sweater, while Sophie—now six years old, vibrant, healthy, and fiercely loved—sat across from him wrapping a clumsy, tape-heavy gift for Clare.
"Do you think she'll like it, Daddy?" Sophie asked, holding up a crookedly wrapped box containing a hand-painted ceramic mug.
"She's going to love it," Victor assured her, smiling warmly.
A knock sounded at the front door. Victor stood up and opened it to find Clare, Amanda, and a few family members arriving for dinner, shaking the snow from their coats as laughter and warm greetings filled the foyer.
Later that evening, after dinner had been served and the presents were piled high under the tree, Sophie walked over to the window, pressing her small hands against the glass to watch the snowflakes drift down past the warm lamplight outside.
Victor walked up behind her, gently wrapping a soft wool blanket around her shoulders.
"What are you thinking about, sweetie?" he asked softly.
Sophie looked up at him, her amber eyes reflecting the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree. "I was just thinking about last year. When I was sitting on that cold bench in the snow."
Victor’s chest tightened. He knelt down beside her, pulling her close. "You never have to be cold again, Sophie. I promise you."
May you like
Sophie smiled, resting her head against his chest, her small fingers wrapping securely around his hand. "I know, Daddy. Because you found me."
Outside, the snow fell on the city like a blessing, and inside, the home they had built together shone like a beacon of light in the winter night—proof that sometimes, the greatest families are the ones we choose with our hearts.
