Chapter 18 - The Shadow Lifted

The federal trials concluded by late summer.
The media frenzy surrounding the collapse of the Obsidian Syndicate and the exposure of Halcyon Tech's corrupt board members dominated the financial news for weeks, but inside Victor’s life, the headlines felt like a distant, irrelevant television show.
Amanda, recognizing that her legal threats and bitter opposition had not only failed but thoroughly alienated her from mutual high-society circles, had quietly stepped back, granting Victor extended joint custody of Clare without further litigation.
It was a Saturday afternoon when Clare and Sophie finally met.

Victor let out a long, quiet breath, leaning against the doorframe of the kitchen. He felt a warm hand rest gently on his arm. He turned to see Amanda standing beside him—not with the sharp, venomous edge she had carried on Christmas morning, but with a quiet, humbled maturity.
"You really love her, don't you, Victor?" Amanda asked softly, watching the two girls laugh over the blocks.
"With everything I am," Victor answered honestly, without a trace of defense.

Amanda nodded slowly. "Clare talks about her constantly. She thinks it's the coolest thing in the world having a sister. You... you did a good thing, Victor."
For the first time in years, the tension between them dissolved into something resembling peace.
