Chapter 3 - SHADOWS OF THE PASTThe revelation sent a shockwave through the room.

"Cartel?" Ethan exclaimed, his voice laced with thunderous rage. "How the hell does a low-life financial scammer like Ryan have connections to an armed syndicate?"
"Because Ryan wasn't acting alone," I said, a sudden realization washing over me like ice water. I rapidly typed commands into my keyboard, pulling up the ownership records of the shell company Ryan used to launder the stolen veterans' funds. "Look at the primary benefactor listed under 'Apex Global Holdings.' It isn't Ryan."
Ethan leaned over my shoulder, reading the name on the screen. His eyes narrowed. "Victor Vance... no relation to the Colonel, right?"
"None," Colonel Vance confirmed, coming over to look. "Victor Vance is a disgraced former CIA operative turned money launderer for international weapons cartels. He operates out of South America, specializing in using corrupt family trusts to wash black-market currency into legitimate US real estate."
Everything suddenly clicked together like pieces of a bloody puzzle.
My mother hadn't just embezzled my father’s money—she had borrowed money from Victor Vance’s syndicate to finance Ryan’s failed luxury ventures years ago. When she couldn't pay back the high-interest loans, Vance gave her an ultimatum: turn over access to military supply lines through Ethan’s deployment logistics network, or face immediate elimination.
"They weren't trying to steal this house for the money," I whispered, horror rising in my throat. "They needed this property because of what’s underneath it."
Ethan frowned. "What are you talking about, Maya? This house sits on five acres of normal suburban land."
"It sits on five acres that adjoin the former military logistics depot closed down in 2018," I corrected, pulling up a topographical map of the property. "Dad was the chief financial auditor for that depot decommissioning! Before he died, he purchased this specific plot of land under my name. I thought it was just an investment for my future. But look at the underground survey maps!"
I overlaid the survey map with a structural scan. Beneath our backyard lay a forgotten Cold War-era subterranean bunker system—directly connected to the closed military depot.
"Ryan and Vance were going to use the transfer paperwork they tried to force me to sign tonight to gain legal ownership of this land," I explained, my voice trembling. "They aren't just stealing money, Ethan. They’re using this house as a transit hub to move illegal contraband directly into the state without going through border checkpoints!"
Before anyone could process the terrifying reality, the lights inside our house suddenly flickered and died.
Total darkness plunged the room.
Outside, the faint hum of the emergency generator clicked on, casting deep, ominous red shadows across the walls.
CRASH!
The sound of shattering glass echoed from the ground-floor living room.
"Get down!" Ethan roared, drawing his sidearm from his shoulder holster in one fluid motion. He shoved me behind the reinforced steel desk in my office just as a volley of silenced gunfire ripped through the drywall above our heads!
Pfft! Pfft! Pfft!
Plaster exploded into dust. Detective Lin drew her firearm, taking cover behind the doorframe, while Colonel Vance pulled a compact tactical radio from his belt.

"Mayday! Mayday! Shots fired at target location! All units engage!" Vance barked into the radio, but only static answered back.
"They've jammed local communications!" Lin yelled over the sound of footsteps rushing up the central staircase. "They aren't here to sign papers anymore, Maya! They’re here to wipe the evidence... and us!"
