Chapter 5 - FIRE AND TRUTHBefore the flame could touch the pooled gasoline, Ethan threw himself forward, kicking Margaret’s wrist with brutal accuracy. The flare flew through the air, landing inside the stainless-steel sink, where it hissed harmlessly against wet dishes.

Margaret collapsed onto the tile, sobbing violently as Ethan kicked the gas canister out of reach.
"Get her up!" Colonel Vance ordered, grabbing Margaret by the arm and dragging her toward the basement stairs. "She’s a primary witness—we need her alive!"
We tumbled down the spiral staircase into the cool, dark air of the subterranean wine cellar. I ran directly to the back wall, behind a massive oak display rack, and pressed my palm against a hidden electronic keypad concealed behind a false stone panel.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-CLICK.
The heavy stone wall groaned as hydraulic pumps activated, sliding a six-inch-thick steel door open to reveal a lit concrete corridor extending into the darkness beneath the earth.
"Get inside! Move!" Ethan shouted, pushing Detective Lin, Vance, and Margaret into the doorway.
Just as Ethan was about to step through, a heavy iron boot struck him square in the chest!
Ethan flew backward, crashing hard against the concrete floor of the cellar.
Standing in the doorway of the stairs was Ryan, holding an automatic shotgun, his face smeared with grease and blood, his eyes wide with lethal intent.
"End of the line, little brother," Ryan sneered, leveling the shotgun directly at Ethan’s head. "No military squad is coming to rescue you down here."
"Ryan, don't do this!" Margaret screamed from inside the bunker, trying to reach for him. "He's your brother-in-law!"
"Shut up, old woman!" Ryan barked without breaking eye contact with Ethan. "You were just my ticket to the money! Vance promised me a new identity in Europe once I liquidated this property and eliminated everyone who knew about the paper trail!"
My heart stopped. From my position inside the door, my fingers slid into my tactical belt, where I carried my forensic equipment—including a high-intensity, industrial-grade magnesium laser pointer used for detecting chemical residues at crime scenes.
"Ryan," I said, my voice eerily calm, stepping out from behind the steel blast door.
Ryan shifted his eyes toward me for a fraction of a second, sneering. "What, Maya? Going to analyze my balance sheet before I blow your husband’s head off?"
"No," I replied cold-bloodedly. "I'm going to blind you."
I clicked the laser switch on.
A blinding, invisible 500-milliwatt beam aimed directly into Ryan’s eyes.
"ARGHHH! MY EYES! MY EYES!" Ryan shrieked, instantly dropping the shotgun and clutching his face as the intense light fried his retinas, causing unbearable flash-blindness!
Ethan didn't waste a millisecond. He swept Ryan’s legs out from under him with a sweeping kick, sending Ryan crashing headfirst into the stone floor. Before Ryan could recover, Ethan delivered a lightning-fast knockout punch straight to his jaw.
Ryan went limp instantly.
Ethan grabbed Ryan by his collar, dragged his unconscious body across the threshold into the bunker, and slammed the heavy blast door shut.
THUD! CLICK-LOCK!
The heavy steel deadbolts engaged just as a volley of heavy machine-gun fire rattled against the exterior of the door from the mercenaries outside.
Inside the bunker, total silence fell—broken only by the heavy breathing of our group and the hysterical, quiet weeping of my mother.
Ethan leaned against the cold concrete wall, panting, wiping blood from his knuckles. He looked at me, a mixture of disbelief and utter pride in his eyes.
"A laser pointer?" he chuckled breathlessly.
"Forensic tools," I smiled weakly, my knees finally shaking with exhaustion. "Always bring them to a gunfight."
Colonel Vance checked his tactical watch. "The blast door will hold for hours. But we aren't safe yet. Look at the end of this tunnel."

We turned our flashlights down the long concrete corridor.
At the far end stood a glowing bank of server racks, spinning hard drives, and a massive LED screen displaying a countdown timer... currently at 08:42... 08:41... 08:40.
