Chapter 8 - THE SHOCKING TWIST & THE AFTERMATHThe tension inside the subterranean vault reached a lethal boiling point.

Ryan, who had just regained consciousness, groaned on the floor, looking up at Brittany with bloodshot, confused eyes. "Brittany... honey... help me... tell them to lower their weapons..."

Brittany didn't even look down at him. She raised her foot and kicked Ryan hard in the ribs, stepping right over his bruised body.

"Shut up, you idiot," Brittany spat, her tone completely devoid of the whiny, spoiled persona she had maintained for years. "You were the most useful fool I ever bought. You thought I actually liked you? You were nothing more than a brainless key to access Ethan’s military clearances and Maya’s inheritance."

Ryan gasped, his heart breaking in real-time as the horrifying truth finally shattered his fragile ego. "No... no, you said we were going to Paris... you said we were starting over..."

"Paris?" Brittany laughed, a sound so icy it chilled the room. "I’m taking the $50 million currently being routed through this server and flying to Dubai tonight. And none of you are going to stop me."

"You're too late, Brittany," I said, stepping directly in front of the server console, blocking her view of the screen. "The upload completed twenty seconds ago. Federal agencies across three continents just received your real identity, your biometrics, and the location of every shell account under your control."

Brittany’s smile faded slightly, replaced by a dark, murderous glare. "Then I’ll just kill you all and disappear before the federal marshals even mobilize."

She leveled her assault rifle at my chest and pulled the trigger.

CLICK.

Nothing happened.

She pulled it again. CLICK. CLICK.

Brittany’s eyes widened in sudden panic as she racked the bolt back, only for a live cartridge to drop uselessly to the floor.

"Looking for these?" Ethan asked coolly.

He raised his left hand, displaying the firing pins and primary ammunition magazines he had quietly extracted from the mercenaries' weapons back in the kitchen during the fire battle!

Ethan had anticipated their tactical setup the moment he breached the house!

"Now!" Ethan barked!

Detective Lin and Colonel Vance lunged forward simultaneously, tackling the two mercenaries flanking Brittany. Ethan sprinted across the room, grabbing Brittany’s rifle, twisting her arm behind her back with a sickening crack, and slamming her face-first into the concrete server wall!

"AGHHH!" Brittany shrieked as steel handcuffs snapped around her wrists.

"Brittany Vance—or should I say, Katya Rostova," Detective Lin said smoothly, reading her true alias from the server screen while ratcheting the cuffs tight. "You are under arrest for international terrorism, corporate espionage, grand theft, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Outside, the heavy thud of military chopper blades began to shake the underground bunker.

Dozens of searchlights illuminated the backyard as tactical units from the FBI and Special Operations Command descended upon the property, securing the perimeter and taking control of the scene.

TWO WEEKS LATERThe morning sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my newly restored living room outside Denver. The smell of fresh paint and wood polish filled the air, completely erasing the scent of smoke and betrayal.

I sat at my dining table, sipping hot coffee, looking over the morning newspaper headlines laid out in front of me:

"LARGEST CARTEL FINANCIAL RING IN US HISTORY DISMANTLED BY FORENSIC INVESTIGATOR AND MILITARY SPOUSE"

"SOCIETY MATRIARCH MARGARET VANCE AND SON SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS WITHOUT PAROLE FOR EMBEZZLEMENT AND CONSPIRACY"

"INTERNATIONAL OPERATIVE 'BRITTANY' FACES LIFE IN FEDERAL PENITENTIARY"

Footsteps approached from behind. Strong, warm arms wrapped around my shoulders, and Ethan leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss against the side of my cheek where the bruise had completely healed.

"You're on the front page of the Wall Street Journal again," Ethan smiled, setting a fresh plate of breakfast down beside my coffee.

"They're calling me the 'Ghost Auditor,'" I laughed softly, leaning back against his chest. "I think I prefer 'Consultant.'"

"How are you feeling about the trial ending?" Ethan asked gently, his thumb rubbing my shoulder.

"Relieved," I admitted, looking at a framed photograph of my father resting on my desk. "Dad finally gets to rest in peace. His name is cleared, his legacy is restored, and the people who destroyed him will spend the rest of their lives behind iron bars."

"And what about us?" Ethan asked, a playful glint in his dark eyes. "Now that my deployment is officially over and your biggest case is closed... what’s our next move?"

I smiled, pulling a sleek black envelope from my pocket and sliding it across the table toward him.

Ethan opened it. Inside were two first-class plane tickets to the Amalfi Coast in Italy, alongside a deed for a quiet villa overlooking the ocean—purchased entirely under our joint names.

"No hidden accounts," I teased, looking up into his eyes. "No fake signatures. No toxic family. Just you, me, and a well-deserved vacation."

Ethan laughed, pulling me up into his arms and lifting me into a warm, powerful embrace.

"Now that," Ethan whispered softly, "is an investment I'll happily co-sign for the rest of my life."

THE END
