Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE AT OAK RIDGEEthan moved with lethal precision. Years of special operations training in war zones kicked in instantly. He didn't panic; his breathing slowed, his posture crouched low to the floor.

"Maya, stay behind this desk. It’s reinforced with Kevlar lining—I had it installed when I bought the home office furniture," Ethan instructed calmly, popping the safety off his pistol. "Lin, watch the hallway. Vance, hold the secondary fire exit."

"How many are there?" Lin asked, her firearm trained on the darkening corridor outside my office door.

"At least four," Ethan replied, listening intently to the rhythmic squeak of boots on the hardwood. "Heavy footwear. Tactical gear. These aren't petty thieves, Lin. These are Vance’s professional mercenaries."

Suddenly, a voice echoed down the hallway—a voice that was chillingly familiar, yet warped by arrogance and rage.

"Ethan! Maya!" Ryan called out, his voice bouncing off the high ceilings. "Did you really think a few low-level police cars could hold me? You brought government suits into my family business! You ruined everything!"

"You ruined yourself, Ryan!" I shouted from behind the desk, keeping my voice steady. "We have all your records! The offshore accounts, the forged signatures, the cartel transfers! It's over!"

A sinister chuckle echoed from the shadows.

"It’s only over when the witnesses stop breathing, dear sister-in-law!" Ryan taunted. "Do you know how much money Victor Vance promised me if I delivered this land? $20 million! I don't care about family! I don't care about mother! I only care about my payout!"

FLASH-BANG!

A blinding white light and a deafening explosion shattered the hallway air.

Disorientation hit instantly. My ears rang violently, and the world spun in a blur of white light and smoke.

Through the haze, I saw two heavily armed men in black tactical gear burst into the office, their assault rifles raised!

Ethan didn't hesitate. He lunged forward from the side, grabbing the barrel of the first mercenary's rifle, twisting it upward as a hail of bullets ripped into the ceiling plaster. With a brutal knee to the soldier's midsection, Ethan threw him over his shoulder, slamming him into the second attacker.

BANG! BANG!

Detective Lin fired two precise shots, neutralizing the second mercenary instantly.

Ethan wrestled the assault rifle from the first man's grip, struck him across the temple with the heavy buttstock, knocking him unconscious, and immediately grabbed his tactical vest to retrieve spare magazines.

"They're pushing us toward the back stairwell!" Ethan yelled over the ringing in my ears, hauling me up by my arm. "We can't stay in this room—they’ll throw a fragmentation grenade in next time!"

"Where do we go?" I cried, wiping smoke from my eyes.

"To the bunker," I realized suddenly, staring at Ethan. "The access door is inside the wine cellar below the kitchen! It's blast-proof!"

"Lead the way!" Colonel Vance shouted, firing three warning shots down the corridor to suppress incoming fire.

We sprinted through the smoke-filled hallway, ducking beneath stray bullets that pulverized the family portraits lining the walls. As we reached the kitchen landing, I saw a figure standing near the open basement door holding a petrol canister.

It was my mother.

Margaret looked completely unhinged. Her pristine silk blouse was stained with soot, her pearl necklace snapped, spilling white beads across the floor like scattered teeth. In her hand, she held a lit emergency flare.

"Mother, stop!" I screamed, pulling up short. "You're going to blow the entire house up!"

"If I can't have my status, nobody gets anything!" Margaret shrieked, her eyes wild with madness. "You ruined my life, Maya! You were supposed to be the quiet, obedient daughter! You were supposed to let Ryan take the fall!"

May you like

"He isn't taking the fall for you, Margaret!" Ethan yelled, stepping between her and me with his weapon raised. "He betrayed you! He’s using you as a shield so he can escape with Vance's team!"

"Liar!" Margaret screamed, swinging the burning flare toward the gasoline trail she had poured across the kitchen floor!
