Chapter 14 - Whispers in the DarkThe coastal air of Cape Cod rolled in off the Atlantic, carrying the sharp, salty scent of the ocean and the distant sound of crashing waves. It was late evening, and the four women sat gathered around a weathered wooden fire pit on the back deck of a sprawling beach house rented for their annual summer reunion.

Flames licked upward into the cool night air, casting dancing amber shadows across their faces. A bottle of chilled white wine sat on the picnic table beside a platter of artisan cheeses and fruit.

“I still can't believe we actually pulled off that joint vacation last year,” Elena laughed, wrapping her wool blanket tighter around her shoulders as she stared into the fire. “If someone had told me two years ago I’d be drinking wine with my ex-boyfriend’s wife and his two other secret girlfriends, I would have laughed them out of the room.”

“It’s the ultimate plot twist,” Maya agreed, raising her glass in a silent toast. “Who needs fiction when real life is this deliciously chaotic?”

Brooke turned her gaze toward Claire, who sat quietly, watching the embers glow. “How are things on the home front, Claire? Any more ghost sightings of the ex?”

Claire took a sip of her wine, smiling faintly. “None. The divorce papers were the final period on that sentence. Last I heard, he relocated out of state after finishing his probation community service. He’s living in a tiny studio apartment downtown, trying to rebuild some semblance of a normal life from scratch.”

“Good,” Brooke said without a shred of malice, just cold, objective justice. “Some people need to lose everything to realize what they took for granted.”

“The best part,” Claire said, setting her glass down on the wooden armrest, “is that I don't care anymore. For a long time, my entire narrative was shaped by what he did, what he hid, and who he was pretending to be. But now? That story belongs to someone else.”

“To rewriting our own scripts,” Elena raised her glass higher.

“To rewriting our scripts,” the four women chorused together, their voices blending harmoniously against the background roar of the ocean.
