Chapter 20 - The Grand OpeningSpring had returned to the city, bursting forth in vibrant shades of green and brilliant golden sunlight.

The grand ballroom of the downtown cultural center was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs popped, classical music swelled from the orchestra pit, and the murmur of high society filled the air. Tonight was the annual charity gala and corporate sponsorship awards ceremony—one of the most prestigious events of the year.
And tonight, Apex Financial Advisory was being awarded the title of Firm of the Year.
Claire stood backstage, adjusting the cuffs of her stunning emerald-green evening gown. Her hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, secured with diamond-accented pins, and on her feet were custom-made, professional red dance shoes—a subtle nod to where her journey of reclamation had truly begun.
“You’re up in two minutes, Claire,” Sarah whispered with a proud smile, peeking through the heavy velvet stage curtains. “The ballroom is completely packed. The mayor is sitting in the front row.”
“Thank you, Sarah,” Claire replied, taking a deep, centering breath.
Across the backstage green room, Brooke, Elena, and Maya stood waiting, dressed to the nines in their own glittering evening wear. They had insisted on being right beside her for the milestone moment.
“If you cry during your speech, I’m auctioning off your corner office,” Elena joked, adjusting Claire’s diamond necklace with a loving tap.
“I won't cry,” Claire laughed, her eyes bright and steady. “I’m a financial analyst. I only deal in verified facts.”
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the master of ceremonies’ voice boomed through the massive overhead speakers across the ballroom. “Please put your hands together for the founder and managing director of Apex Financial Advisory—Claire Miller!”
Deafening applause erupted from the crowd, wave after wave of enthusiastic cheering echoing through the hall.
Claire took a deep breath, lifted her chin with absolute, unshakeable grace, and walked out from behind the velvet curtains into the blinding, beautiful brilliance of the spotlight.

She stood at the center of the stage, looking out across a sea of hundreds of people who respected her, valued her, and knew her true name. Not a ghost, not a fiction, not a secondary character in someone else’s play—but the undisputed author of her own destiny.
As she stepped up to the microphone to deliver her speech, she knew one thing for certain: the books were balanced, the ledger was clean, and her life was entirely her own.
