Chapter 15 - The Unexpected EncounterBack in the city, autumn had returned, painting the maple trees along the downtown avenues in brilliant shades of amber and crimson.

Claire was rushing between client meetings, her heels clicking briskly against the pavement as she made her way toward a popular artisanal coffee shop on 5th Street. She needed a quick espresso before her afternoon consultation with a major real estate developer.
The bell above the coffee shop chimed as she pushed the door open, stepping out of the chilly wind into the warm, aromatic embrace of roasted coffee beans and cinnamon.
She stepped up to the counter, waiting for the barista to finish an order. As she reached into her bag for her card, a familiar voice drifted from the corner table near the window.
“I’m just saying... the project timeline needs to be restructured if we want to secure the zoning permit by November.”
Claire froze. She didn't need to turn her head to know who it was. The cadence, the tone—it was unmistakable.
She turned slowly, her eyes drifting toward the corner table.
Jason sat alone in a worn leather armchair. He wore a plain, unbranded gray jacket instead of his usual tailored corporate suits. His hair was grayer at the temples, and he held a paper coffee cup between his hands as if trying to absorb its warmth. He looked up just as Claire’s gaze locked onto him.
For a second, the bustling coffee shop seemed to vanish around them. The noise of the espresso machine, the murmur of patrons, the clatter of ceramic mugs—all of it faded into a heavy, suspended silence.
Jason’s breath caught. He slowly stood up from the chair, taking a hesitant step forward as if he couldn't believe she was real.
“Claire,” he whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator.
Claire didn't look away. She didn't panic, and she didn't flinch. She simply stood tall, her posture immaculate in her charcoal trench coat, looking at him not with anger, but with the quiet, detached curiosity of a stranger observing an artifact from a museum exhibit long since closed.
“Hello, Jason,” she said, her voice calm, level, and entirely devoid of emotion.
Jason looked down at the floor, his hands trembling slightly before he shoved them deep into his pockets. “I heard... I heard about your firm’s expansion. Front-page feature in the business journal. It’s... it’s amazing. You deserve it.”
“Thank you,” Claire replied simply, offering no warmth in return.
“I’m living here now,” Jason gestured vaguely toward the street outside. “Working a regular consulting job. No secrets. No... no alternate schedules.”
“I’m glad to hear you’re finally living in reality, Jason,” Claire said, her tone professional yet chillingly distant. “It’s a much better place.”
Before Jason could scramble for another word, the barista called out her name from the counter.
“Americano for Claire?”
May you like
“That’s me,” Claire said smoothly, turning away from Jason without a second glance. She picked up her coffee from the counter, dropped a polite nod toward the barista, and walked out the glass door into the crisp autumn air.
She didn't look back through the window. She didn't wonder what he was thinking, or where he was going, or who he might be talking to next.
