Chapter 6 - The Summit MeetingTwo hours later, a private conference room at a sleek downtown hotel had been hastily rented under Robert’s name.

The room was silent except for the hum of the overhead air conditioner. Around the mahogany table sat four women: Claire, Brooke, Elena, and Maya. None of them looked at each other. They sat like jurors waiting to deliver a verdict on a criminal who hadn't yet been brought into the courtroom.

The door clicked open, and Jason walked in.

He looked like a man walking to his own execution. His hair was disheveled, his tie crooked, his eyes hollow and bloodshot. When he saw all four women sitting together around the table, he stopped dead in his tracks, his hand still gripping the brass doorknob.

“What is... what is this?” Jason choked out, his voice barely audible.

“Close the door, Jason,” Robert’s voice boomed from the head of the table. Robert sat like a patriarch guarding his family’s honor, his arms crossed over his chest. “Sit down. We have a lot of accounting to do.”

Jason swallowed hard, his legs trembling as he walked toward an empty chair at the far end of the table. He didn't dare look at Claire. Instead, his eyes darted frantically between Brooke, Elena, and Maya.

“You lied to all of us,” Maya spoke first. She was shaking, her tea cup rattling against the saucer. “For two years, Jason. Two years you told me we were building a future together, that you were in the middle of a messy, drawn-out divorce that just needed time to finalize legally.”

“And you told me my career was the only thing standing in the way of our marriage,” Elena added, her voice sharp with humiliation. “You used my family’s cabin as a weekend getaway while you were supposedly auditing banks in Chicago!”

“And you told me your wife had abandoned you for Seattle six months before we met,” Brooke chimed in, slamming her hand down on the table. “You made me feel like I was saving you from loneliness when you were just adding another room to your little kingdom of deceit!”

Jason slumped forward, burying his face in his hands. He didn't deny a single word. He didn't offer an excuse. The silence in the room became thick, suffocating, and absolute.

Claire sat quietly at the center of the table, watching him. She didn't feel rage anymore. She didn't feel the burning betrayal that had driven her out of the dance studio the night before. Instead, she felt a profound, cold clarity.

“You know what the most pathetic part of all this is, Jason?” Claire finally spoke, her voice cutting through the heavy air like a scalpel.

Jason slowly lifted his head, his red-rimmed eyes meeting hers with a look of desperate, pathetic pleading.

“It’s not the sex,” Claire continued, her tone chillingly level. “It’s not even the double lives or the fabricated stories. It’s the sheer amount of energy you wasted. You spent eleven years telling me you couldn't dance because you had two left feet. You convinced me you were clumsy, tired, and incapable of spontaneity. But all the while, you were learning the tango, choreographing showcases, planning romantic getaways, and managing three separate emotional portfolios.”

She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the mahogany table.

“You weren't incapable of effort, Jason. You were just saving all your effort for everyone except the person who built your life with you.”

“Claire, please,” Jason whispered, tears finally spilling over his eyelids. “I lost my mind. I don't know how I let it get this far. I love you—I swear to God, out of all of them, my life with you was real.”

“None of it was real, Jason,” Claire said, standing up from her chair. She picked up her leather portfolio and slipped her car keys off her finger. “Because a life built on a foundation of erased people isn't a life. It’s a fiction.”

She looked around the table at Brooke, Elena, and Maya. Three women who had been played just as thoroughly as she had.

“Ladies,” Claire said gently, nodding to each of them. “I’m sorry you were dragged into his performance. But the show is over.”

As Claire turned toward the exit, her phone buzzed in her pocket with a notification from her divorce lawyer: “Draft papers ready for signature. Meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9 AM.”

She didn't look back as she walked out of the room, leaving Jason sitting alone among the ruins of the empire he had built.
