Ethan Cole trusted contracts.
He trusted lawyers.
He trusted security cameras.
But he had stopped trusting people years ago.
At just twenty-eight years old, Ethan had become one of America's youngest real estate billionaires. Every magazine called him a genius. Every business rival feared him. Every employee smiled the moment he entered a room.
And Ethan hated every one of those smiles.
Because he never knew which ones were real.
His Nashville mansion was enormous—more like a luxury hotel than a home. Marble floors reflected crystal chandeliers. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked rolling Tennessee hills. Every room was perfectly decorated...

There were no birthday parties.

No family dinners.
Only silence.

And a stuffed rabbit named Noodle that looked as old as she was.
The little girl walked into the mansion like she had stepped into a fairy tale instead of the home of one of America's richest men.
She wasn't afraid.

She simply waved.
"Hi."
Ethan blinked.
Nobody had greeted him that casually in years.
"My rabbit says this castle is lonely," Sophia announced.
Maria nearly fainted from embarrassment.
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Cole..."
But Ethan wasn't listening.

Out of everything the child could have noticed...
She noticed that.
Against every rule he had ever created, Ethan allowed Sophia to stay.
Days turned into weeks.
Whenever Maria's babysitter canceled, Sophia quietly sat in the sitting room drawing pictures while her mother worked.
She drew sunshine.
Dogs.
Rainbows.
Families holding hands.
Every drawing had smiling people.
Every drawing had someone hugging someone else.
One afternoon Ethan asked,
"Why does every picture have a family?"

"Because homes are happier when people hug."

Maria burst into tears.
"I'm so sorry... Please don't fire me..."

Sophia whispered something so quietly that only he could hear.
"I didn't paint you because it was funny."
She gently touched his hand.
"I painted you because sad people forget they're beautiful."
