CHAPTER 4 — The Secret They Buried for Nine Years

"Stay behind me."
It was the first thing Ethan said as the men entered the building.
Years of negotiating billion-dollar deals had taught him how to recognize confidence.
These men weren't here to talk.
They were here to silence someone.
The tallest man walked forward calmly.
"Mr. Cole."
"Our employer would appreciate a private conversation."
Ethan didn't move.
"Who sent you?"
The stranger smiled.
"You've already met him."
"You just don't remember."
Before Ethan could react, security from the nursing home appeared, forcing the men to leave without violence.
But one of them placed a sealed envelope on the reception desk.
"No matter how rich you are," he said quietly, "some truths cost more than money."
Then they disappeared.
Inside the envelope was a birth certificate.
The father's name:
Ethan Cole.
The mother's name:
Emily Carter.
Date of birth:
Exactly the night of the accident.
Ethan's knees nearly gave out.
His daughter had lived.
Someone had erased her from his life.
But why?
Rosa closed her eyes.
"Because your grandfather."
The words hit harder than any punch.
"He controlled everything."
"The hospital."
"The investigators."
"The family attorneys."
"He believed a child would make you abandon the empire he spent decades building."
"So after the accident..."
"He made sure you believed there was nothing left to love."
Ethan's entire childhood suddenly made sense.
The endless pressure.
The obsession with success.
The warnings that emotions made men weak.
His grandfather hadn't simply built an empire.
He had built a prison.
Maria looked at Ethan with tears in her eyes.
"I'm so sorry."
He couldn't answer.
He was staring at Sophia.
She was quietly coloring in the corner, completely unaware that his entire world had just been rewritten.
Then Sophia looked up.
"Mr. Ethan?"
He forced a smile.
"Yes?"
She walked over and placed another drawing into his hands.
It showed a little girl holding the hand of a taller girl.
Above them she had written in shaky letters:
"Big Sister."
Ethan frowned.
"Who's the big sister?"
Sophia smiled innocently.
"My grandma always said every lonely little girl deserves to find her sister."
At that exact moment, Ethan's phone rang.
His private investigator had spent six years searching for answers with no success.
This time, his voice was shaking.
"Mr. Cole..."
"I found her."
"Your daughter is alive."
"But there's something you need to know before you meet her."
A long silence followed.
"She doesn't know you're her father..."
May you like
"...because she was adopted nine years ago by the very man who stole her from you."
