CHAPTER 10 — The Woman Who Saved a Life

Police surrounded the Nashville mansion within minutes.

Lights blazed across the property.

Every door had been locked.

No windows were broken.

Nothing appeared stolen.

Yet the entire house felt... wrong.

Maria sat on the staircase holding Sophia tightly.

She pointed toward the nursery Ethan had kept locked for years.

"The door..."

"It was open."

Ethan's blood ran cold.

He had locked that room himself.

Slowly, he walked inside.

Nothing had been taken.

Instead...

Something had been left behind.

A tiny pink knitted baby shoe rested neatly inside the empty crib.

Beside it lay a folded note.

In careful handwriting, it read:

She never stopped looking for you.

There was no signature.

No fingerprints.

No clues.

Only those six words.

The following morning, Ethan and Detective Harris drove to the quiet farmhouse where retired nurse Hannah Brooks lived.

The elderly woman opened the door.

The moment she saw Ethan...

She burst into tears.

"I knew this day would come."

Without another word, she invited them inside.

On the living room wall hung dozens of photographs from her nursing career.

One picture caught Ethan's eye immediately.

It showed Hannah standing in a maternity ward...

Holding two newborn baby girls.

Twins.

His knees nearly gave out.

"You were there," he whispered.

Hannah nodded.

"I delivered them."

Tears rolled down her face.

"They were both healthy."

"They both cried."

"They both survived."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Everything he had believed for nine years had been a lie.

Hannah continued.

"The night of the accident, your grandfather arrived before sunrise."

"He brought lawyers."

"Security."

"And men I had never seen before."

"He ordered everyone to remain silent."

"I refused."

"So they fired me."

She reached into an old wooden chest and removed a sealed envelope.

"I've kept this hidden ever since."

Inside was an original hospital wristband.

Baby A — Grace Cole

Baby B — Lily Cole

Ethan whispered the second name aloud.

"Lily..."

For the first time...

His missing daughter had a name.

Hannah gently took his hand.

"I know where she was taken."

Hope exploded inside Ethan's chest.

"Where is she?"

Hannah hesitated.

Then tears filled her eyes once again.

"She isn't missing anymore."

"She's been living under another name..."

"...less than twenty miles from your mansion."

At that exact moment, Detective Harris received an emergency call.

He answered.

His face instantly lost all color.

He lowered the phone slowly and looked at Ethan.

"You need to prepare yourself."

"The woman raising Lily..."

May you like

"...was found dead this morning."
