CHAPTER 6 — The Child They Chose to Threaten

Maria collapsed into Ethan's arms the moment he reached the police station.
"This is my fault," she sobbed.
"I should never have brought her into your life."
Ethan gently shook his head.
"No."
"They chose Sophia because of me."
For years, Ethan had believed billion-dollar business wars were fought in boardrooms.
Now he understood.
The truly ruthless people attacked the innocent.
The police moved quickly.
Security cameras showed a woman pretending to help Sophia find her mother.
Within seconds, the child had been led into a waiting SUV.
Professional.
Planned.
No mistakes.
The kidnappers wanted leverage.
Nothing more.
Hours later, another message arrived.
No ransom.
No demands.
Just an address.
An abandoned warehouse outside Nashville.
Against every warning from the police, Ethan went.
He entered the dark building alone.
A single spotlight illuminated the center of the room.
Sophia sat on a wooden chair, hugging Noodle.
She wasn't crying.
The moment she saw Ethan, she smiled.
"I knew you'd come."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I'm sorry I was late."
Before he could reach her, slow applause echoed through the warehouse.
Richard Bennett stepped out of the shadows.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Not a single sign of panic.
"Ethan," he said quietly.
"I hoped we'd meet under better circumstances."
Ethan stared at him in disbelief.
"You kidnapped a three-year-old."
Richard looked genuinely offended.
"I protected her."
"From people who are watching both of us."
"What are you talking about?"
Richard sighed.
"You still think I'm the villain."
"If I wanted to destroy you..."
"I would have done it years ago."
He handed Ethan a sealed folder.
Inside were classified financial records.
Hospital documents.
Private letters.
And one handwritten confession.
Signed by...
Charles Cole.
Ethan's grandfather.
The confession admitted everything.
The forged death certificate.
The fake adoption.
The bribed doctors.
The threats against witnesses.
But the final sentence froze Ethan where he stood.
"If Ethan ever discovers the truth, eliminate anyone who can reconnect him with his daughter."
Ethan slowly looked up.
Richard's face had gone pale.
"They've already started."
"They took Sophia today because Rosa talked."
"They're coming for Grace next."
Before Ethan could speak—
A deafening gunshot shattered the silence.
The warehouse lights exploded into darkness.
Sophia screamed.
Someone grabbed Ethan from behind.
And in the chaos, a small voice cried out through the darkness...
"Daddy!"
But it wasn't Sophia's voice.
May you like
It belonged to a little girl Ethan had never heard before.
