CHAPTER 7 — The Voice That Stopped Time

"Daddy!"

The tiny voice echoed through the darkness.

Ethan froze.

For one impossible second, the entire world stood still.

Another gunshot rang out.

Security guards rushed into the warehouse as flashlights cut through the darkness.

"Mr. Cole! Stay down!"

But Ethan wasn't listening.

His eyes searched desperately until he saw her.

A little girl stood trembling behind a stack of wooden crates.

Long chestnut hair.

Bright blue eyes.

Emily's eyes.

The same eyes he had seen in old photographs only hours before.

She was real.

She was here.

Grace.

She looked terrified.

A woman wrapped both arms around her protectively.

"Don't shoot!" the woman cried.

"I'm her teacher! I brought her here because Richard told me she'd be safe!"

Police officers quickly secured the building.

The gunfire stopped.

Sophia ran straight into Maria's arms, crying for the first time all night.

Noodle was still clutched tightly against her chest.

Ethan slowly walked toward the older girl.

Every step felt unreal.

Grace stared at him with confusion.

"Who are you?"

The question pierced his heart.

Before Ethan could answer, Richard stepped between them.

"Grace..."

His voice cracked.

"You need to hear something."

The little girl looked up at the man she had called Dad her entire life.

Richard knelt in front of her, tears filling his eyes.

"I love you."

"I always will."

"But I didn't give you life."

Silence.

"I raised you..."

"...but he's your father."

Richard looked back at Ethan.

Grace slowly turned toward the stranger standing only a few feet away.

Her lips trembled.

"No..."

She shook her head.

"You're lying."

"My daddy is right here."

She grabbed Richard's hand so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

Ethan didn't move.

He understood.

Love couldn't be replaced by DNA.

Nine years of bedtime stories.

Nine years of scraped knees.

Nine years of birthday candles.

Those memories belonged to Richard.

And no court in the world could erase them.

Just then, Detective Harris received an urgent phone call.

His face changed instantly.

"We have another problem."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"Your grandfather's confession wasn't complete."

"There was another child listed in the hospital records."

Ethan frowned.

"What child?"

The detective swallowed hard.

"The records show... twins."

The room fell completely silent.

Emily hadn't given birth to one baby.

May you like

She had given birth to two.

And no one knew where the second child had gone.
