Chapter 1 - The Bargain of the Broken

Hook: He offered her a million dollars to save her sister. Her response shattered his entire empire.
Benjamin Torres stared at the little girl, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The cold October wind howled between the skyscrapers, but the silence between them was deafening.
"You want me... to teach you how to pray?" Benjamin’s voice, usually a weapon of sharp, corporate precision, cracked.
The girl nodded. Her name was Lily. She squeezed the rag doll so tightly its faded button eyes seemed to strain against the fabric. "My mommy says God hears people who are important. You have a big car. You have a big building. You must be very important to Him. Please, mister. Chloe is so hot, and she won’t wake up. Tell me the magic words to make God fix her."
A bitter laugh escaped Benjamin’s throat before he could stop it. "There are no magic words, kid. And trust me, God doesn't care about big cars or tall buildings. If He did, my mother would still be here."
Lily didn't flinch. Instead, she reached out and touched his hand. Her fingers were ice-cold, but her touch felt like an electric shock. "But you know Him. I can see it in your eyes. You’re sad because you miss Him too."
Benjamin pulled his hand back as if burned. He couldn't handle this. He couldn't look into those desperate blue eyes and see the ghost of his own childhood innocence. He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out his leather wallet, and extracted a sleek, black titanium debit card.
"Look," Benjamin said, his voice hardening into the tone he used to settle multi-million-dollar disputes. "I don't pray. But I have money. Unlimited money. Take this. I will call my personal driver right now. He will take you to the hospital, and I will pay for the best doctors, the best surgeons, the private suite—everything. I will buy your sister's life. Just don't ask me to pray."
Lily looked at the black card, then up at Benjamin. A single tear tracked through the dust on her cheek.
"Can your card buy a miracle, mister?" she whispered. "Because the doctor told Mommy that only a miracle can save Chloe now. Money can't talk to God."
Before Benjamin could answer, his phone shrieked in his hand. It wasn't a standard ringtone. It was the emergency alarm reserved for his head of security. He answered it, his eyes still locked on the little girl.
"Torres," he snapped.
"Sir, we have a massive breach," his security chief, Marcus, gasped. "It’s your brother, Julian. He’s bypassed the firewalls. He’s transferring the offshore reserve accounts—over four hundred million dollars—right now. And Benjamin... he’s not just taking the money. He’s uploaded a encrypted manifesto to the SEC. He’s framing you for the illegal shipping routes from five years ago. The feds are already on their way to your penthouse."
Benjamin’s blood turned to ice. Julian. His estranged, gambling-addict brother whom he had bailed out of debt a dozen times.
"Where is Julian now?" Benjamin growled.
"He was last tracked near St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital," Marcus replied. "But sir, there's more. The hospital is currently undergoing a massive power grid failure due to the storm. The backup generators are failing. They are hand-ventilating patients in the ICU."
Lily gasped, her small hands flying to her mouth. "St. Jude's... that's where Chloe is!"
Benjamin looked from his phone to the little girl. His empire was collapsing, his brother had betrayed him, the FBI was hunting him, and a five-year-old girl was begging him for a prayer while her sister suffocated in a dark hospital room.

"Get in the car," Benjamin commanded, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, desperate fire.
The storm was just beginning.
