Chapter 7 - The Final Hour

Hook: The doctors declare her dead, but a shocking confession from Julian changes everything.

"Code Blue! We have a flatline!" the nurse yelled, pushing Benjamin aside as a team of doctors burst into the room with a crash cart.

"No! Chloe!" the mother screamed, falling to her knees. Lily began to cry, burying her face in Benjamin's chest. Benjamin held her tight, his heart breaking into a thousand pieces.

Why? his mind screamed at the ceiling. Why did you let us pray just to take her away?

"Charge to 100!" the lead doctor shouted, placing the defibrillator paddles on Chloe’s tiny chest. "Clear!"

Chloe’s body jolted. The line stayed flat.

"Charge to 150! Clear!"

Nothing.

Outside the room, loud voices echoed in the corridor. "Get out of my way! You don't understand!"

Julian pushed his way past the security guards and the news crew, his face pale, his hands shaking. He looked at the flatlining monitor, then at Benjamin, who was holding Lily.

"Ben..." Julian gasped, his voice cracked with emotion. "I didn't... I didn't mean for this to happen."

"Get out, Julian," Benjamin said, his voice dead and empty. "You won. I’m ruined. Just go."

"No, Ben, you don't understand!" Julian cried, tears streaming down his face. "The toxic reports... they weren't from your plant. I forged them."

The entire room fell dead silent, save for the flatlining heart monitor. Even the reporter gasped, signaling the camera operator to turn the lens toward Julian.

"What did you say?" Benjamin whispered.

"I forged the environmental audits," Julian confessed, collapsing against the doorframe, broken by the weight of his own guilt. "I wanted to destroy you. I wanted to take your company and make you look like a monster. The water in the East District... it’s not poisoned by Apex. It was a city infrastructure failure that occurred years ago, before you even bought the plant. I used it to frame you. But when I saw you on TV... when I heard you pray... I realized I became the monster I thought you were."

Benjamin stared at his brother, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical wound. He had confessed to a crime he didn't commit, destroyed his own empire, all based on a lie.

"Defibrillator ready again!" the doctor yelled, ignoring the drama in the doorway. "One more time! Clear!"

Thump.

The room held its breath.

For five agonizing seconds, the monitor remained a flat, green line.

Then...

Beep.

Beep... Beep.

The line began to wave. The heart rate stabilized. Chloe’s chest rose and fell on its own.

"She’s back," the doctor breathed, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Her heart rate is stabilizing. It’s a miracle."
