Chapter 5 - The Devil’s Confession

Hook: To save the child, Benjamin must make a public confession that will destroy his life forever.
The sound of sirens began to wail in the distance—closer now, echoing through the dark Manhattan streets. The FBI was coming for him. Julian had made sure of that.
"Please," Benjamin said, holding his hands up in surrender. "I know you hate me. You have every right to. But the power is out. The manual ventilation won't keep her stable forever. I have a private medical helicopter on standby at my downtown helipad. It has its own independent power supply and advanced pediatric life-support systems. I can get her out of here. I can get her to a private clinic in Boston."
The mother stared at him, her hands shaking as she pumped the bag. "Why should I trust you? You’re a monster."
"Because if you don't, she dies," Benjamin said bluntly. "And because I will pay any price. Look at me." He pointed to the window, where blue and red police lights were beginning to paint the wet buildings across the street. "The police are coming for me. I’m going to lose everything. My company, my reputation, my freedom. I don't care about any of it anymore. Just let me save Chloe."
Suddenly, the door burst open. Marcus, his head of security, stood there, drenched and panting.
"Sir, the feds are downstairs. They’ve blocked the exits. And Julian... he’s downstairs too, with a news crew. He’s telling them you’re trying to flee the country to escape prosecution."
Benjamin closed his eyes. He had one card left to play.
"Marcus," Benjamin said quietly. "Get the news crew up here."
"Sir? That’s suicide. If you go on camera now, with the SEC warrant—"
"Do it!" Benjamin commanded. "And tell the hospital administration that I am personally financing the immediate installation of a military-grade backup generator for this entire ward. I will wire the funds from my personal account before they lock me out."
Ten minutes later, the dark ICU room was flooded with the harsh, blinding white lights of a television camera. A reporter from a major network stood by the door, her microphone raised, her eyes wide with shock at the scene before her: the billionaire Benjamin Torres, covered in blood and sweat, standing next to a dying child and her terrified mother.
"Mr. Torres," the reporter stammered, live on air. "Are you admitting to the charges of corporate negligence and fraud regarding the Apex Industries toxic runoff?"
Benjamin looked directly into the camera lens. Millions of people were watching. His board of directors, his shareholders, his enemies, his brother.
"I am not just admitting to it," Benjamin said, his voice echoing in the small room. "I am claiming full responsibility. My greed, my ignorance, and my negligence poisoned this child. I built a mountain of gold on the backs of families who had nothing, and I let my own brother use my blind spots to destroy lives. I am giving up my position as CEO. I am turning over all my assets—every single dollar—to a trust fund for the victims of the East District. And I am surrendering to the authorities."

He paused, looking down at Chloe, whose breathing was shallow and weak.
"But first," Benjamin said, his eyes burning with tears, "I have to keep a promise."
