Chapter 2 - The Red Lining of Heaven

Hook: As the city went dark, Benjamin realized his brother's betrayal was only the second worst thing waiting for him tonight.

The twin-turbo engine of the BMW roared to life, tearing through the wet streets of Manhattan. Benjamin drove like a man possessed, weaving through traffic while his dashboard screen flashed with incoming alerts.

“Torres Stock Plummets 40% amid SEC Investigation.” “Billionaire Benjamin Torres Wanted for Questioning.”

He ignored them all. Beside him in the leather passenger seat, Lily sat perfectly still, holding her rag doll, her eyes glued to the rain-slicked windshield.

"Are we going to see Chloe?" she asked softly.

"Yes," Benjamin muttered, checking his rearview mirror. A pair of headlights was trailing him closely—too closely. A black SUV. It wasn't the police. The police would have sirens. This was something else.

"My mother used to say that when it rains, it’s just the angels washing the windows of heaven so they can see us better," Lily said, her voice a fragile contrast to the roaring engine.

"Your mother is a dreamer, Lily. The world doesn't work on poetry. It works on power and leverage," Benjamin said, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. He glanced at his phone. A text message from an unknown number flashed:

‘Pull over, Ben. Let’s talk about mother’s will before you lose everything.’

It was Julian.

Benjamin slammed his foot on the accelerator. The BMW fish-tailed slightly before gripping the wet asphalt. He knew what Julian wanted. It wasn't just the money. Julian had always blamed Benjamin for their mother’s death. He believed Benjamin’s obsession with work had kept him away from her bedside during her final hours, leaving Julian alone to watch her slip away.

"He's behind us, isn't he?" Lily asked suddenly, looking back.

"Who?"

"The bad man. The one who makes you angry."

Benjamin didn't answer. He turned sharply onto the avenue leading to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. But as they approached, the neighborhood was plunged into darkness. The streetlights flickered and died. The massive, towering facade of the hospital was almost entirely black, save for a few flickering emergency lights on the lower floors.

"The generators," Benjamin whispered. Marcus was right. The hospital was running out of time.

Suddenly, the black SUV accelerated, ramming into the back of Benjamin's car with a sickening crunch of metal. The impact sent the BMW spinning across the wet intersection, crashing violently into a concrete barrier.

Airbags deployed with a deafening bang. Smoke filled the cabin.

Benjamin groaned, his head throbbing as blood dripped from a cut on his forehead. He looked to his right. Lily was slumped over, unconscious, her small hand still loosely gripping the rag doll.

Before he could unbuckle his seatbelt, the driver's side door was ripped open. Standing in the pouring rain, holding a heavy iron tire iron, was Julian. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, and filled with a terrifying, desperate madness.

"End of the road, big brother," Julian sneered. "Time to pay your debts."
