Chapter 3 - Blood on the Altar of Success

Hook: The dark secret behind the billionaire's wealth is finally revealed—and it involves the girl's sister.

"Julian, stop," Benjamin gasped, coughing through the smoke. He unbuckled himself and crawled out of the shattered vehicle, collapsing onto the wet asphalt. "There's a kid in the car. She's hurt."

Julian glanced inside the BMW, his face twisting in disgust. "A kid? Is this your new PR stunt, Ben? Trying to look like a savior while your company poisons the very water supply of the East District?"

Benjamin’s heart stopped. "What are you talking about?"

"Don't play dumb!" Julian screamed, rain drenching his designer jacket. "I found the chemical reports from the industrial plant you acquired last year. The runoff. The lead contamination. It went straight into the municipal reservoir. That’s why the kids in the East District are getting sick, Ben! That’s why that little girl’s sister is dying in that hospital right now! Your company did this to buy another yacht!"

Benjamin stared at his brother in utter horror. The acquisition of Apex Industries. He had signed off on the papers without reading the environmental audits—he had trusted his legal team, trusted the numbers, trusted the efficiency.

Another day done. Another acquisition signed.

The words echoed in his mind like a death knell. He hadn't just ignored God; he had actively funded the poison that was killing Lily’s sister.

"I didn't know," Benjamin whispered, his voice cracking. "Julian, I swear to God, I didn't know."

"You didn't care!" Julian yelled, raising the iron rod. "You only cared about the bottom line! But it ends tonight. I’m taking the offshore accounts, and I’m letting the world see who Benjamin Torres really is."

From inside the crashed car, a weak whimper echoed. Lily was waking up.

"Mister...?" she cried out, her voice tiny and terrified. "It’s dark. I can't find my doll."

Julian hesitated, his eyes darting to the little girl. For all his rage, he wasn't a killer of children. Benjamin saw his chance. He lunged forward, tackling Julian to the ground. The two brothers scrambled in the wet mud and shattered glass, fighting with a primal fury fueled by years of unspoken resentment.

Benjamin managed to pin Julian down, wresting the iron rod from his grip and throwing it into the darkness.

"Go!" Benjamin roared, standing up and pulling Lily from the wreckage. She was crying, clutching her head, but she was alive. "We have to get inside the hospital!"

"You can't run from this, Ben!" Julian screamed from the ground, coughing up mud. "The police are already on their way! You’re going to jail!"

May you like

"I don't care about jail!" Benjamin yelled back, lifting Lily into his arms. "I have to save her sister!"

He ran toward the dark, silent entrance of St. Jude's, holding the child of the family he had unwittingly destroyed.
