Chapter 10 - THE TRUE INHERITANCESix months later, the headlines in the Wall Street Journal didn't talk about scandal, ruin, or corporate warfare.

They talked about resurrection.

With the recovered legal documents provided by Clarissa, the federal government and independent maritime trustees had formally restituted the Vance shipping assets back to their rightful heir: Maya Vance-Vale.

The Vales and the Vances—once bitter rivals who had torn each other apart in the shadows of Wall Street—were officially united under one roof, not by corporate greed or forced arranged marriages, but by three small children with storm-gray eyes.

On a bright, warm Saturday in June, the lawn of our Montauk cliffside home was filled with laughter, the smell of grilled burgers, and the sound of running feet.

Noah, Ivy, and Owen were turning four years old—properly this time, surrounded by a mountain of presents, homemade chocolate cake, and a golden retriever puppy that practically lived in their laps.

I stood on the wide wooden deck, leaning against the railing, holding a glass of sparkling cider.

From behind me, strong arms wrapped around my waist, and a warm chin rested gently on my shoulder.

“You know,” Sebastian murmured into my ear, his voice low and teasing, “technically speaking, you’re now the majority shareholder of half the commercial real estate in Manhattan, and the owner of the largest maritime shipping fleet on the East Coast.”

I smiled, leaning back against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat. “Does that mean I’m the one who’s out of your league now, Mr. Vale?”

Sebastian chuckled, spinning me around so I was facing him. He looked down into my eyes with an expression of absolute, unwavering devotion—the same look he had given me in college, before the towers, before the lies, before the heartbreak.

“You were out of my league the very first day I met you, Maya,” he whispered, leaning down to press his lips softly against mine. “I just spent four years figuring out how to deserve you.”

Down on the lawn, Owen yelled out in a joyful squeic, holding up a plastic toy sword and shouting, “Look, Daddy! I’m a pirate captain!”

Sebastian laughed, kissing the top of my head one more time before taking my hand in his.

“Come on, Captain,” Sebastian smiled, pulling me toward the lawn. “Let’s go join our crew.”

And as we ran together across the green grass toward our children, under the bright, limitless sky of a world we had fought through hell to reclaim, I knew the true story had only just begun.
