Chapter 4 - THE SUBURBAN SANCTUARYThe apartment in Astoria wasn’t much, but it was safe.

It was a third-floor walk-up with peeling wallpaper in the hallway and floorboards that creaked in a familiar rhythm. But inside, it smelled like cinnamon, laundry detergent, and warmth.

I bolted the heavy iron deadbolt, dropped my keys into the ceramic bowl by the door, and sank against the wall, exhaling a breath I felt like I’d been holding for four long years.

“Mommy?”

I looked down. Noah was standing there, holding his little wool hat in his hands, his big storm-gray eyes—his father's eyes—looking up at me with too much maturity for a three-year-old.

“I’m right here, baby,” I whispered, dropping to my knees and pulling all three of them into a fierce, suffocating hug. Ivy buried her face in my neck, while Owen clutched his battered stuffed dog against my shoulder.

“Was that the bad man?” Noah asked quietly.

My heart twisted into a knot. “No, sweetie. Just... a ghost from the past.”

“Are we going to have to move again?” Ivy asked, her lower lip trembling.

“No,” I said, kissing the top of her dark curls, my voice fierce and resolute. “Nobody is moving us anywhere. This is our home. We are safe here.”

But even as I said the words, a cold knot of dread formed in my stomach.

I knew Sebastian Vale. I knew the terrifying, relentless drive that made him a billionaire by thirty. The moment he saw Owen’s eyes, the hunt had begun. He wouldn't stop until he knew the truth, and once he discovered that Daniel Mercer and his grandfather had lied to him... all hell was going to break loose.

I stood up, herded the kids toward the kitchen for a rushed dinner of macaroni and cheese, and got them into their pajamas by eight o'clock. Once they were fast asleep in their shared bedroom, their soft, rhythmic breathing filling the quiet room, I walked over to the narrow kitchen window and pulled back the faded curtain.

The street below was quiet. Just a few flickering streetlights and a stray cat rummaging through a garbage can.

Then, parked three cars down under the shadows of a large oak tree, I saw it.

A matte-black Maybach. Tinted windows. Unmoving.

It had been there for twenty minutes.

My breath hitched. I didn't need to see the license plate to know who was sitting inside.

He had found us.

Before I could turn away from the window, my phone buzzed on the laminate countertop. It was an unknown number.

I stared at it for three long rings before picking it up.

“Maya,” Sebastian’s voice came through the speaker, low, rough, and thick with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher. “I’m standing at the bottom of your stairs. I’m not coming up tonight. I’m not going to force my way in. But I need you to know... I am not leaving.”

“Go away, Sebastian,” I whispered fiercely into the phone, my hand trembling. “Go back to your penthouse, go back to Clarissa, go back to your billionaire life and pretend you never saw us.”

“Clarissa is history,” he replied instantly. “And my life isn't up there anymore. It’s right behind that wooden door on the third floor.”

“You missed your chance four years ago,” tears finally broke free, hot and fast down my cheeks. “When I stood outside your tower crying, when I bled through a high-risk pregnancy alone, when I had to choose between paying rent and buying baby formula—you weren't there. You don't get to waltz back in now just because of a pair of gray eyes.”

“I know,” Sebastian’s voice cracked slightly, a sound so raw it took my breath away. “I know I don’t deserve forgiveness, Maya. But give me one hour. Just one hour tomorrow morning to look you in the eyes and explain everything my family kept from me. If you still want me gone after that... I swear to God, I will walk away and never look back.”

The line went dead with a soft click.

May you like

I lowered the phone slowly, my chest heaving, staring out the window at the dark silhouette of the car parked below.

Little did I know, the war between Sebastian and his grandfather was about to spill directly onto my doorstep—and a hidden document from four years ago was about to blow the entire Vale empire wide open.
