Chapter 13 - THE MIDNIGHT ALLIANCEBy midnight, the lights in our Montauk home were blazing.

We weren't packing bags this time. We were sitting at the heavy oak dining table surrounded by financial audit reports, encrypted flash drives, and fax printouts sent securely from London.
The front door chimed softlyâour private security alert.
Sebastian drew his Glock, stepping silently toward the entryway. I stood right behind him, holding a heavy iron flashlight.
The door clicked open, and a tall, elegant figure stepped out of the fog.
Clarissa Hart.
She looked exhausted, her hair swept up in a loose clip, wearing a heavy trench coat. But in her hands, she held a thick, leather-bound binder with the official seal of the New York State Supreme Court.
âPut the gun away, Sebastian,â Clarissa said dryly, closing the door behind her against the ocean chill. âIf I wanted you dead, I would have sent my fatherâs lawyers six months ago.â
Sebastian lowered the weapon, though he didn't relax his posture. âWhat are you doing here, Clarissa? How did you get past the perimeter?â
âYour security is a joke, for starters,â she walked straight into the dining room, dropping the leather binder onto the table with a heavy thud. She looked at me, her expression devoid of the old Manhattan malice, replaced by something resembling grim respect. âAnd Iâm here because my father is going down with Arthur Vale, and I refuse to sink with them.â
I stepped forward, eyeing the binder. âWhat is this?â
âThat,â Clarissa tapped the cover, âis the original trust agreement signed by Edward Vance thirty-five years ago. The document Arthur Vale claimed was destroyed in a fire. It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the maritime assets legally belong to Mayaâand it includes a signed confession from the corrupt federal judge Arthur just bribed for his medical release.â
Sebastian flipped open the binder, his eyes scanning the legal text at lightning speed. A slow, triumphant smile spread across his face.
âWhere did you get this?â Sebastian asked in awe.

âMy father kept a safe in his study,â Clarissa said bitterly. âHe thought he was protecting the Hart-Vale alliance. When I found out he helped Arthur cover up your children's existence four years ago... I cleaned out his safe.â
She looked at me, her voice softening just a fraction. âI didn't do it for you, Maya. I did it because I wanted my life back. And taking down the Vales is the best revenge I could ever ask for.â
