Chapter 8 - THE SAFE HOUSE BY THE SEAThe salt air of Montauk was crisp, biting, and smelled of freedom.

The house wasn't a mega-mansion. It was a sprawling, weathered cedar-shingle cottage perched right on the edge of a jagged cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in the endless expanse of gray-blue water, matching the exact shade of my sonâs eyes.
For two weeks, the world had gone completely insane outside our little bubble.
True to his word, Sebastian had released the documents to the press. The ensuing corporate earthquake had made front-page news across the globe: VALE EMPIRE ROCKED BY FAMILY SCANDAL; FOUNDER OUSTED AMID EXTORTION ALLEGATIONS. Arthur Vale had suffered a mild stroke and was currently under house arrest awaiting federal indictment, while Daniel Mercer had fled the country for the Cayman Islands.
And Sebastian? He had stepped down as CEO of Vale Enterprises, handing control over to an independent board committee, walking away from billions of dollars in stock options without a single backward glance.
Now, he was sitting on the weathered wooden deck in a faded flannel shirt, trying to untangle a stubborn knot in Ivyâs pink jump-rope while Noah and Owen chased a golden retriever puppy across the lawn.
I stepped out onto the deck, holding two mugs of hot coffee, and handed one to him.
Sebastian looked up, taking the mug, his fingers brushing against mine. The calluses on his hands were different nowânot the soft hands of a corporate desk-jockey, but the hands of a man who spent his mornings fixing broken fence posts and building wooden toys for his kids.
âYouâre awfully quiet today,â Sebastian said softly, patting the wooden bench beside him.
I sat down, pulling my knees up to my chest, letting the ocean breeze catch my hair. âIâm just waiting for the other shoe to drop, I guess. Itâs hard to believe weâre actually here. That weâre safe.â
Sebastian set his coffee mug down, turned on the bench, and gently took my hand in his. His thumb traced the small scar on my knuckleâa souvenir from a kitchen accident two years ago when I was working double shifts at a diner to pay the rent.
âThe war is over, Maya,â he whispered, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart flip. âMy grandfatherâs empire is gone. Vale Tower doesn't control us anymore. Thereâs no security guards, no shell corporations, no society brides. Just us.â
âYou gave up everything for us, Sebastian,â I murmured, a lump forming in my throat. âYour entire legacy. Everything you worked your whole life to build.â
âI didn't give it up,â Sebastian smiled, a warm, genuine expression that I had only ever seen flashes of during our college days before the money and the power swallowed him whole. âI finally traded it for something real.â
Down on the lawn, Owen suddenly tripped over a patch of grass and let out a little cry. Before I could even stand up, Sebastian was already on his feet, sprinting across the grass with long, athletic strides. He scooped Owen up into the air, tossing him over his shoulder until the little boyâs tears turned instantly into shrieks of delighted laughter.
I watched them from the deck, a profound wave of peace washing over me.

The billionaire who had once underestimated me, the man who had destroyed my life four years ago, had destroyed his own empire to put us back together.
Little did I know, the quiet coastal life we had chosen was about to be interrupted by one final, unexpected visitorâand a choice that would seal our fate forever.
