Chapter 16 - THE PROMISE ON THE CLIFFTwo weeks after the courthouse victory, the headline in the New York Times read: THE NEW DYNASTY: HOW MAYA VANCE AND SEBASTIAN VALE REDEFINED POWER.

The toxic corporate culture of the old guard was dismantled from the top down. Sebastian officially dissolved the old Vale holding company, merging its assets with the restored Vance maritime fleet to create Vance-Vale Global Humanitarian Logisticsâa multi-billion-dollar enterprise dedicated to ethical shipping, worker housing, and orphan support foundations across the tristate area.
We didn't move back to the obsidian monolith in Manhattan. We stayed right on the rugged, wind-swept cliffs of Montauk.
It was a golden Friday evening. The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the Atlantic Ocean in shades of bruised purple, fiery orange, and deep sapphire.
Noah, Ivy, and Owen were fast asleep in their beds after a long day of building sandcastles on the beach, clutching their favorite toys.
I was standing out on the cedar-shingle deck, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a warm mug of tea.
Footsteps crunched softly on the wooden planks. Strong arms slid around my waist from behind, and Sebastian rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.
âYouâre thinking about the park, aren't you?â Sebastian whispered, his voice warm against my neck.
I smiled, leaning back into his embrace. âI was thinking about how terrified I was that day. Running behind the stroller, clutching my kids, thinking I was all alone in the world.â
Sebastian turned me around so I was facing him, his storm-gray eyes catching the last rays of twilight. He dropped to one knee right there on the wooden deck.
My breath hitched. My hands flew to my mouth.
âSebastian... what are you doing?â
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, snapping it open. Inside wasn't a cold, multi-carat diamond ring meant for a society merger like the one he had given Clarissa. It was a simple, elegant band of intertwined platinum and white gold, holding a tiny, exquisite storm-gray sapphire that mirrored our children's eyes.
âFour years ago, I gave you divorce papers and a broken heart,â Sebastian said, his voice thick with raw, unvarnished emotion. âI let my family, my status, and my blindness destroy the only real thing I ever had. You survived hell, Maya. You raised three incredible children with your bare hands, and you brought me back from the dead.â
Tears spilled over my eyelashes, running hot and fast down my cheeks.
âSebastian...â
May you like
âWe never had a real wedding,â he continued, looking up at me with absolute adoration. âNo vows, no guests, no truth. So, Maya Vance... will you marry me again? Properly this time? No secrets, no empires, just us against the world?â
âYes,â I sobbed out, throwing my arms around his neck as he stood up, lifting me off my feet and spinning me around as the ocean waves crashed below us. âYes, a million times yes.â
