Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW OVER MONTAUKThe ink on the Vance-Vale maritime restitution papers was barely dry, but the ghosts of the past refused to stay buried.

It was a suffocatingly humid Tuesday morning in July when the calm of our Montauk sanctuary was shattered. I was in the kitchen slicing strawberries for the triplets' breakfast when Sebastian burst through the back screen door, his face pale, a copy of the Financial Post gripped so tightly in his hand that the paper was tearing at the edges.
âSebastian? What is it?â My heart instantly seized. In our new life, every sudden movement felt like the prelude to another storm.
âArthur,â Sebastian breathed out, his voice laced with cold disbelief. âHeâs out.â
I dropped the knife. The plastic cutting board hit the counter with a sharp thud. âOut? How? He was facing federal indictment for fraud, wiretapping, and extortion! Heâs eighty-two years old, he had a strokeâhow is he out on bail already?â
âA federal judge in the Southern District just granted a medical commutation on compassionate grounds,â Sebastian said, raking a hand through his dark hair, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. âAnd worse... he didn't go back to Manhattan. His private jet touched down in East Hampton twenty minutes ago.â
Before I could even process the warning, a shrill, piercing scream echoed from the front lawn.
âMommy! Daddy!â
It was Noah.
Sebastian didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the kitchen island, kicking the front door open with a resounding crash. I sprinted right behind him, my breath catching in my throat, my maternal instincts flashing red and dangerous.
Standing at the edge of our gravel driveway was a sleek, obsidian-black limousine. And leaning heavily against a silver-headed cane, flanked by two armed men in sharp federal marshals' windbreakers, was Arthur Vale.

His face was gaunt, his skin the color of old parchment, but his obsidian eyes still burned with a toxic, unyielding malice.
âGood morning, grandson,â Arthur rasped, a sickening smile stretching across his thin lips. âDid you really think a little corporate paperwork and a seaside cottage could lock the true king out of his kingdom?â
