Chapter 1 - The Weight of the LedgerThe black sedan cut through the slick, rain-washed streets of Boston like a scalpel. Inside, Dominic Vale did not blink. His sharp gaze remained fixed on the manila folder resting on his knees—the detailed dossier on Harbor House, Claire Bennett, and little Sophie Carter.

For fourteen months, Dominic had kept himself locked in a self-imposed fortress of grief, resentment, and absolute control. He had refused to speak to his dying father, convinced that the old man was a monster who deserved every ounce of his lonely end. Vincent Vale had built a kingdom on blood, extortion, and terror. But as Dominic turned the pages of the report, a chilling realization took hold: the empire of shadows had been secretly bleeding cash to fund a haven for orphans.
Why?
"We are approaching Dorchester, sir," Noah murmured from the front seat, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. "The neighborhood isn't our territory. Should I call a security detail?"
"No," Dominic said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that brooked no argument. "I go alone."
The sedan pulled up outside a weathered red-brick building with a cheerful blue door that screamed defiance against the dreary industrial backdrop. Through the smudged windows, Dominic could see children laughing, sitting at low wooden tables, painting, and chasing each other.
And there she was.
Claire Bennett knelt beside a little boy with a scraped knee, pressing a bright green dinosaur bandage onto his skin. Her auburn hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, illuminated by the pale morning light.
Dominic stepped out of the car, adjusting his bespoke charcoal suit. As he walked toward the door, the heavy iron handle felt cold beneath his palm. He pushed it open, stepping into a world that felt entirely alien to him—a world filled with life, warmth, and innocence.
And then, Claire looked up.

Her smile vanished instantly. The warmth in her eyes hardened into a fierce, protective glare as she stood to her feet, instinctively stepping in front of a group of children.
"You," Claire said, her voice trembling slightly with sudden, electric anger. "What are you doing here?"
