Chapter 2 - The Lion in the DenThe ambient noise of children playing seemed to dim, swallowed by the heavy tension vibrating between Dominic and Claire.

"You're trespassing on private property, Mr. Vale," Claire said, stepping forward, refusing to cower despite the towering, dangerous aura radiating from him. "If this is about the money—about your father's donations—I told you yesterday. We thought it was from a legitimate donor. We didn't know it came from... from that world."

Dominic didn't flinch. He walked slowly past a rack of colorful backpacks, his sharp eyes scanning the room before locking onto her defiant gaze.

"It's not about the money, Miss Bennett," Dominic replied, his voice chillingly calm. "It's about why."

Before Claire could fire back, a small blur of yellow darted out from behind a shelving unit.

"Mr. Quiet!"

Sophie appeared, clutching a half-eaten peanut butter sandwich in one hand and a crayon in the other. She stopped right in front of Dominic, looking up with those wide, fearless dark brown eyes.

Claire's breath caught. "Sophie, step away from him. Right now."

"No," Sophie said simply, tilting her head. "He’s not scary. He’s just lonely."

Dominic stared down at the child. Something shifted violently behind his ribs—a strange, foreign sensation he hadn't felt since he was a boy. He knelt down, ignoring the dust on the floor, bringing himself to eye level with her.

"Why do you keep calling me that?" Dominic asked quietly.

"Because you talk like a shadow," Sophie whispered back, reaching out to poke his tailored lapel. "And shadows don't yell."

Claire rushed forward, gently pulling Sophie back into her arms, shielding the girl's body against her own. She looked at Dominic with a mix of fury and profound wariness.

"Leave us alone, Mr. Vale," Claire hissed, her voice shaking. "We don't want your family's blood money. We don't want your protection. We survive just fine without the Vale syndicate."

"Do you?" Dominic stood up, towering over her. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a stack of documents, dropping them onto a nearby table. "Your utility bills are three months overdue. Your roof leaked during last night's storm. And the city is threatening to rezone this block for commercial development next month. You have thirty days before you're out on the street, Miss Bennett."

Claire froze, her face turning pale. "How do you..."

"I know everything," Dominic said smoothly. "And my father knew it too. Now, tell me what Vincent Vale was to you, or I will tear this building down brick by brick to find out myself."
