Chapter 7 - Inheriting the EmpireThree days after the trial, the corporate offices of Vance Meridian Systems felt entirely different.

The heavy atmosphere of fear, corporate espionage, and backstabbing paranoia that Julian and Evelyn had cultivated was gone, swept out by a complete federal and internal corporate audit. Armed security details posted at every entrance ensured that no corrupted executives or rogue assets remained on the premises.

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk that had belonged to my father for over thirty years.

On the corner of the desk rested the scorched unit patch from Kandahar, sitting right next to the controlling share certificates of the multi-billion-dollar enterprise.

My phone buzzed. It was Agent Miller from the DOJ.

“Captain Vance, we’ve frozen all offshore accounts tied to Evelyn and Julian. The federal asset forfeiture process is complete. Vance Meridian Systems is entirely under your legal control, free of debt and foreign entanglements.”

“Thank you, Agent Miller,” I replied evenly. “Send the restructuring team in tomorrow morning. We have a lot of rebuilding to do.”

Just as I hung up, a soft knock echoed at my office door.

"Come in."

The door swung open, and my attorney walked in, carrying a thick stack of finalized corporate documents requiring my signature as the new sole CEO and executor.

"Well, Clara," he said, offering a small, uneasy smile. "I must admit, when you walked into my office months ago facing prison time and total ruin, I didn't think you'd survive the week. Let alone end up owning the entire empire."

I signed the top document with a steady hand, my handwriting sharp and precise.

"Survival isn't about luck, counselor," I said, looking up with a cold, resolute smile. "It's about knowing when to let your enemies dig their own graves."
