CHAPTER 1 — The Maid Everyone Judged

The whispers always began before Emily Carter entered the room.

"There she is."

"The maid with three children by three different fathers."

"I heard no decent man ever wanted her."

Every servant in the Carter mansion had a version of the story. None of them had ever asked Emily if it was true.

Because gossip was easier than kindness.

Emily never defended herself.

Every morning before sunrise, she tied her chestnut hair into a simple ponytail, put on her gray housekeeping uniform, and quietly cleaned one of the largest private estates in Greenwich, Connecticut.

She scrubbed marble floors until they reflected crystal chandeliers.

She polished antique furniture worth more than the house she had grown up in.

She prepared breakfast for a family that barely noticed she existed.

Yet no matter how exhausted she became, she smiled whenever someone needed help.

Especially Nathan Carter.

Nathan wasn't like the rest of the wealthy Carter family.

As CEO of Carter International Holdings, his schedule was relentless. Billion-dollar negotiations filled his calendar. Investors praised his intelligence. Business magazines called him America's youngest self-made corporate genius.

But behind the polished suits and magazine covers lived a lonely man.

His father had died when Nathan was only sixteen.

His mother, Margaret Carter, believed emotions were weaknesses.

"Success comes before happiness," she often reminded him.

Nathan had spent years believing her.

Until Emily quietly changed everything.

One rainy afternoon Nathan collapsed during a board meeting.

A severe autoimmune infection had spread through his body before anyone noticed.

He was rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

Doctors warned his condition could become life-threatening.

Executives visited once.

Margaret came twice.

But Emily...

Emily never left.

Every evening after finishing twelve-hour shifts at the mansion, she took the train into New York carrying homemade soup inside a worn-out thermos.

She read books while he slept.

Adjusted his blankets.

Cleaned his room.

Held his hand whenever the pain became unbearable.

One night Nathan woke after another fever.

The room was dark except for one small lamp.

Emily had fallen asleep sitting upright in the chair beside him.

Her head rested awkwardly against the wall.

Her hands were still wrapped around his IV tube so it wouldn't move while he slept.

Nathan simply stared.

No one had ever cared for him like that.

Not for his money.

Not for his last name.

Simply...

For him.

That night something inside Nathan changed forever.

Weeks later he returned to the mansion.

Healthy.

Stronger.

Completely in love.

One evening he found Emily trimming roses in the estate garden.

The sunset painted everything gold.

"I've been looking for you," Nathan said.

Emily immediately lowered her eyes.

"Is something wrong, sir?"

"Yes."

She became nervous.

"I've fallen in love."

Emily froze.

"I want to marry you."

The garden became completely silent.

A pair of robins flew from the hedge.

Emily slowly shook her head.

"No."

Nathan blinked.

"No?"

"You deserve someone educated... elegant... someone your family can accept."

"I want you."

"You don't understand."

"I don't care about your past."

Emily's voice trembled.

"You should."

Nathan stepped closer.

"I know people say you have three children."

Emily closed her eyes.

"I do."

"I'll love them."

"They're expensive."

"I'll provide."

"They'll become your responsibility."

"I'll become their father."

Tears filled Emily's eyes.

"You don't know what you're promising."

Nathan smiled softly.

"Try me."

For several long seconds Emily simply stared at him.

Then...

Very quietly...

She whispered,

"I've spent my whole life praying nobody would carry my burdens."

Nathan gently held her hands.

"I've spent my whole life searching for someone worth carrying them with."

Emily burst into tears.

For the first time in years...

She allowed herself to believe happiness might actually exist.

Unfortunately...

Someone had witnessed everything.

From the second-floor balcony...

Margaret Carter.

Her face darkened with rage.

She slammed her teacup onto the marble railing.

"Over my dead body."

That very night Margaret summoned the household staff.

"I want every detail about that woman."

One servant eagerly stepped forward.

"My cousin lives in Emily's hometown."

"And?"

"They all say she had three babies with three different men."

Margaret smiled coldly.

"I knew it."

Another servant added,

"She sends almost all her salary home every month."

Margaret laughed.

"So my son is about to become an ATM."

She picked up her phone.

"Hire private investigators."

"I don't care how much it costs."

"I want every dirty secret that woman has ever buried."

Meanwhile...

Hundreds of miles away...

In a tiny farmhouse hidden among the mountains of West Virginia...

Three children waited by the window.

Johnny...

Paul...

Little Lily...

Every afternoon they watched the dirt road.

Not for toys.

Not for gifts.

Only for the mail carrier.

Because once every month...

Emily's envelope always arrived.

Inside was almost every dollar she had earned.

Along with one handwritten sentence.

"Big sister loves you more than anything."

The children hugged the letter like treasure.

None of them knew...

May you like

Powerful people had already begun destroying the only family they had left.
