CHAPTER 6 — The Man Who Claimed to Be Their Father

The black SUV waited until sunset.

Then the driver stepped out.

A tall man in an expensive charcoal suit.

Silver hair.

Confident smile.

He introduced himself to the security gate.

"My name is Richard Bennett."

"I've come for Johnny, Paul, and Lily."

Nathan immediately ordered security to escort the man into the library.

Emily entered moments later.

The instant she saw Richard...

Her face turned white.

"You..."

Richard gave a slow nod.

"It's been a long time, Emily."

Nathan noticed the fear in his wife's eyes.

"You know him?"

Emily whispered,

"He worked with Jacob Harlan."

The room instantly became tense.

Richard calmly placed a leather briefcase on the table.

"I didn't come here to fight."

"I came because those children deserve the truth."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"They're not ready."

Richard slowly opened the briefcase.

Inside were legal documents.

Birth certificates.

Old photographs.

A DNA report.

Nathan frowned.

"What is this?"

Richard answered quietly.

"Johnny..."

"...Paul..."

"...and Lily..."

"...are not Emily's children."

Nathan smiled softly.

"We already know that."

Richard nodded.

"But I haven't finished."

He looked directly at Emily.

"They're also..."

"...not biological siblings."

Silence exploded across the room.

Emily closed her eyes.

Nathan stared in disbelief.

Richard continued.

"Jacob Harlan ran an illegal labor operation."

"When workers died..."

"Children were abandoned."

"Emily secretly gathered them."

"Fed them."

"Raised them together."

"She lied and told everyone they were her own because it was the only way to stop authorities from separating them into different foster homes."

Nathan slowly turned toward his wife.

"You saved..."

"...three completely unrelated children?"

Emily finally broke down.

"They already lost one family."

"I couldn't let them lose another."

Richard reached into the briefcase again.

"I've spent years searching for Lily's biological relatives."

He paused.

"We found them."

Emily's face collapsed.

"What?"

"A married couple in Ohio."

"They've been looking for their missing daughter for eleven years."

Nathan immediately understood the impossible choice standing before Emily.

The family she had built with love...

Was about to collide with the family that had never stopped searching.

As Emily clutched Lily tightly in her arms upstairs, unaware of the truth below, Nathan realized the greatest test of their marriage had nothing to do with the past.

May you like

It would be whether love was strong enough to survive the heartbreaking choices still waiting ahead.
